Oskaloosa Middle School Principal Mark Scholes Passes Away in Tragic Lake Michigan Accident

The Oskaloosa community is mourning the loss of Mark Scholes, the principal of Oskaloosa Middle School, who tragically passed away in a swimming accident in Lake Michigan. Scholes was on vacation with his family when the incident occurred at Ludington State Park.
OSKALOOSA, IA – The Oskaloosa community is mourning the loss of Mark Scholes, the principal of Oskaloosa Middle School, who tragically passed away in a swimming accident in Lake Michigan. Scholes was on vacation with his family when the incident occurred at Ludington State Park.
According to reports from WZZM13 and Manistee News, Scholes was identified as the victim of the drowning incident that took place on July 9, 2024. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but unfortunately, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Mark Scholes was a dedicated educator and leader, known for his unwavering commitment to the success and well-being of his students and staff. His passion for education and his impact on the Oskaloosa community has been profound, leaving a lasting legacy.
In an official statement, Oskaloosa Schools expressed their deep sorrow over Scholes’ untimely passing. “Mark was a dedicated educator and leader who made an incredible impact on our students, staff, and community. His passion for education and commitment to our students’ success were evident in everything he did. We are all grieving this terrible loss.”

Scholes joined the Oskaloosa School District in 2013 as vice principal and later was promoted to principal in 2019 for the middle school.
In response to the tragedy, Oskaloosa Schools will offer grief counseling for students on Thursday, July 11, from 9 am to 3 pm at the Oskaloosa Middle School. School leaders will be present to provide guidance and support to students in need.
