TOP-RANKED WARRIORS DISMANTLE NO. 2 TRITONS ON THE ROAD
Fort Dodge, IA – The top-ranked Indian Hills Women’s Wrestling team earned a statement win on Wednesday night, dropping No. 2 nationally ranked Iowa Central Community College 32-18 on the road to remain unbeaten on the year. The Warriors move to 3-0 in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) duals on the year.
The Warriors secured seven of the 11 matchups on Wednesday night to upend the Tritons, ranked No. 2 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Women’s Wrestling polls but No. 1 in this week’s The Open Mat team and dual rankings. Indian Hills tallied five tech falls and a pair of pins to hand Iowa Central its first league loss of the year. The Warriors are now the lone unbeaten team in the ICCAC at 3-0 and improve to 4-0 overall on the year in duals.
In a matchup of the top two nationally ranked 101lb wrestlers, No. 1 Dutchess King (Lansing, IL/Thornton Fractional South) scored a 12-2 tech fall over No. 2 Emma Lewis to open the night for the Warriors. Sophomore Javanica Mickens (Orlando, FL/Jones) scored a key victory at 109lbs, knocking off No. 2 nationally ranked Dianna Pineda to put Indian Hills ahead 9-1. The defending 116lb national champion and No. 1 nationally ranked Shammilka Miranda Diaz (Salinas, Puerto Rico/Eugenio Guerra Cruz) took down No. 4 Rodiat Adeduntan 10-0 to push the Warriors’ lead to double digits at 13-3. Angelica Vicente Gonzalez earned a 12-1 tech fall at 123lbs as Indian Hills picked up its fourth consecutive win to open the night.
The Tritons responded with three straight victories at 130lbs, 136lbs, and 143lbs, before No. 7 Genesis Gilmore (Clarksville, TN/Montgomery Central) made a statement at 155lbs. In just 25 seconds of mat time, the freshman scored a 10-0 tech fall to regain momentum for the Warriors. Returning All-American and No. 1 nationally ranked Yaracely Saenz (Bernalillo, NM/Bernalillo) made quick work of her opponent to earn an 11-0 tech fall at 170lbs and secure the team win for the Warriors with a 27-13 edge.
No. 3 nationally ranked Norma Alejandro (Olathe, CO/Olathe) dominated the 191lb matchup, picking up a fall in just 1:21 to put an exclamation on the Warriors’ rout of the Tritons.
Indian Hills now heads to Crete, NE for the Doane Open on December 2 before returning home to host a nonconference dual with Trinidad State College (CO) on December 10 at the Multi-Purpose Building in Centerville.
