Grinnell Claws Back To Seize Victory
In a thrilling five-set showdown at Glennie Gymnasium, the Grinnell volleyball team clawed back from an initial setback to seize a hard-fought victory against Monmouth (IL). The match, marked by intense rallies and steadfast defense, displayed the resilience and tenacity of both teams.
The first set saw Grinnell trailing, as Monmouth clinched it narrowly with a 26-24 scoreline. However, Grinnell wasn’t to be subdued easily. They bounced back in the following sets, showcasing a remarkable .314 hitting percentage and accumulating 75 kills against 17 errors on 185 total attacks. Their determination was palpable, as they edged Monmouth in the second set 25-27, and continued their ascent with 25-22 and 25-19 wins in the third and fourth sets, respectively.
Jenna Keller led the charge for Grinnell with an impressive .440 hitting efficiency, hammering down 26 kills. Emily Brewer orchestrated the offense with surgical precision, dishing out 68 assists and bolstering the defense with two blocks. Grinnell’s service game was also on point, with a commendable .886 serving percentage.
Monmouth’s effort was valiant, with their team putting up six total blocks and fighting fiercely in each set. Yet, as the match progressed, Grinnell’s momentum proved unstoppable. They sealed their triumph with a decisive 15-12 victory in the final set, tipping their season record to a positive 13-16, and 5-3 in conference play.
