February 7, 1936 – June 6, 2023
Oskaloosa, Iowa | Age 87

Sally (Johnson) Posovich, 87, of Oskaloosa, entered eternal life on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at the Northern Mahaska Specialty Care Center in Oskaloosa. Sally, daughter of Harold M. and Erin Brooks Johnson, was born in Sebring, Florida, on February 7, 1936.

When Sally was two years old the family moved to northwest Iowa. She lived in many small towns in Iowa, until her family settled in Centerville when Sally was in fifth grade.

Sally graduated from Centerville High School with the class of 1954.

On November 13, 1954, Sally was united in marriage to Steve Posovich, Jr. at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, after Steve completed basic training.

Following their marriage, the family continued the tradition of living in several places. Sally’s outgoing personality and contagious laugh ensured she never met a stranger. The couple, and their four children, made their final move to Oskaloosa, Iowa, on Memorial Day Weekend of 1965. Their fifth child was born in Oskaloosa. Sally remained in the home that she and Steve bought and raised their family in until 2021, when she moved to Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab.

As a young person, Sally was active and involved in many organizations. The desire to serve and give back continued into adulthood, and she served on many local boards including Head Start, YMCA, Oskaloosa Public Library, Senior Citizen Group, and various others. She was also an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa. She was involved with the group that initiated the community Christmas Food Basket Project for over 20 years. Sally cherished the friendships that blossomed from her time serving various organizations.

In addition to serving her community, she and Steve were busy parents with a growing family. They enjoyed many years of supporting their children and grandchildren in various activities. Oskaloosa YMCA Swim Team was a family tradition and there were many musicals, school plays, and a multitude of other athletic events to attend. Steve and Sally were very proud of the fact that all their children graduated from college.

In the mid 1970’s Sally worked as a writer for the Oskaloosa Herald with a weekly column “Sally on Saturday” for many years. Her last employment was at the Oskaloosa Junior High School. She retired from there in the early 2000’s after 25 years.

Sally was an avid tennis player, a sport she took up when her youngest child started school. She delighted in sharing the game with her family and friends and gave lessons for many years. She instilled the love of the game in her children and grandchildren and enjoyed watching one daughter and three granddaughters compete for Oskaloosa High School. She was proud of the fact that she played until she was 81 years old (mainly doubles by that point). It was at that age she had to give up riding her bicycle around town due to her balance beginning to fail. She then decided to take up water aerobics at the YMCA for physical exercise and she played Bridge and did crossword puzzles for mental workouts. She and Steve loved dancing and only gave that up when his health began to fail. They enjoyed golf together for many years as well. Steve always maintained she was a better dancer than golfer, which she had to agree. As grandchildren started to arrive and be involved in various activities, Sally and Steve made every effort to attend as many events as they could. For many years Sally gave back to her church, family, work, and Community.

Her family includes her four daughters: Cynthia Posovich of Cairo, Egypt, Lisa (& Steve) Tucker of Oskaloosa, Dana (& Roger) Finley of San Antonio, Texas, and Jodyie (& David) Lanser of Pella; a son, Michael Posovich of Bend, Oregon; fifteen grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Ed and Candy Johnson of Bend, Oregon; a sister in law, Connie Conkel of Cedar Rapids; and a brother in law, Gabe Raskie of Centerville.

In addition to her husband of over 56 years, Steve; Sally was preceded in death by her parents; a granddaughter, Isabella Posovich; a sister, Katherine Johnson Schindler; and a sister-in-law, Betty Raskie.
