Bvekerwa Named Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year, All-Heart Honorees Announced

Oskaloosa–Assistant Track and Field Coach Zuva Bvekerwa was recognized for leading the Statesmen men’s track and field team to big points as the Heart of America Athletic Conference announced its top awards from last weekend’s indoor championships.

Bvekerwa was named the Heart Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year as the male athletes he coached accounted for 49 points. Headlining the efforts was Showalter Johnson (So., Nassau, Bahamas, Business Management) winning the 60-meter dash in a school and conference meet record of 6.72 seconds.

In his fourth year as an assistant, Bvekerwa assisted athletes in points for eight separate events. William Penn finished sixth out of 13 teams last weekend with 75 points.

The following are the all-Heart awards won by WPU male and female athletes:

First-team all-Heart (Heart champion)
Showalter Johnson (So., Nassau, Bahamas, Business Management)–6.72 seconds in the 60-meter dash
Justin Moeller (Sr., Keota, Iowa, Psychology)–4,843 points in the heptathlon
Keaten Griffen (Fr., Longview, Texas, Software Engineering)–14-3.25 in the pole vault

Second-team all-Heart (Second place)
Tafara Hondonga (Sr., Aberdeen, S.D., Business Management)–49.38 seconds in the 400-meter dash

Third-team all-Heart (Third place)
Showalter Johnson–21.86 seconds in the 200-meter dash
Men’s distance medley relay–10:30.42

Honorable-mention all-Heart (Fourth through sixth place)
Jonah Heckenberg (Jr., Stockport, Iowa, Business Management)–2:31.25 in the 1,000-meter run
Erica Martin (Jr., Detroit, Mich., Sports Management)–42-1.5 in the shot put
Tahj Ferguson (Sr., Hartford, Conn., Psychology)–22-0.25 in the long jump
Abigaille Batu-Tiako (Jr., Plattsburgh, N.Y., Business Management)–17.6.25 in the long jump
Women’s 4×400-meter relay–4:14.01
Justin Moeller–21-6.75 in the long jump
Max Finley (Fr., Richville, N.Y., Secondary Education)–4:29.34 in the one-mile run
