Four Dutch volleyball players land academic honor
PELLA — Four members of the Central College volleyball team were given College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District accolades Wednesday.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve at the varsity level and achieve a 3.50 or better cumulative grade point average (4.00 scale). Each institution can nominate a limited number of players per gender.
Natalie Gaszynski (senior, outside hitter, Huntley, Ill.), Elyse Johnson (junior, middle hitter, Kirksville, Mo.), Rachel Pella (senior, middle hitter, Kansas City, Mo., Park Hill HS) and Amanda Smith (senior, setter, Tipton) were the four Central players chosen. They are now all under consideration for Academic All-America honors.
Gaszynski, an exercise science major, maintains a 3.58 GPA. She led the team with 186 kills, playing in all 25 matches and 88 of 89 sets.
Johnson, a political science and Spanish double major, maintains a 3.90 GPA. She had a team-high 44 blocks on the season and was third with 31 service aces.
Pella, an exercise science major, maintains a 3.67 GPA. She had 25 blocks on the season and had a .201 hitting percentage on 194 attempts.
Smith, an elementary education major, maintains a 3.88 GPA. Smith averaged 5.44 assists and 1.38 kills per set. The American Rivers All-Conference honorable mention choice had nine double-doubles this year.
Central was 10-15 overall on the season with a 1-7 mark in American Rivers Conference matches.
