Silver for Tucker as WPU Finishes Seventh at Heart Preview
Moravia–Behind a runner-up finish from Spencer Tucker (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management), the William Penn men’s golf team took home seventh place at the Heart Preview Monday and Tuesday.
Competing on the site of next spring’s Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship, the Statesmen shot 299 the first day and 310 the second day for a total two-day score of 609 at The Preserve Golf Course.
Park took home the team crown with a score of 589 (299-290), while the Pirates’ Cholnan Nunya claimed the individual crown at four-under 140 (72-68).
William Penn’s 299 on Monday tied for the fourth-lowest score of the day, but unfortunately the navy and gold slid down the standings in the second round.
Tucker placed second out of 68 players, starting with a two-under 70 the first day. Tucker stayed consistent and shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish at 142.
Austin Hafner (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Sports Management) was also strong Monday at 72, but struggled in the next round with a 78 to tie for 18th at 150.
Bailey Johnston (So., Hastings, Minn., Business Management) managed to stay consistent throughout the two days as he posted scores of 80 and 77 (157 total) to tie for 42nd. Cameron Johnson (Sr., Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Business Management) tied for 57th at 164 (81-83), while Jonathan Jarvis (Sr., Burlington, Iowa, Business Management) rounded out the group, shooting 77-88–165 to place 59th overall.
Danny McQuade (Jr., Tucson, Ariz., Political Science) also played as an individual and tied for 57th at 164 (81-83).
“I was pleased with how our men fared this week, but most excited about the potential for this group to improve even further going into the spring,” said Head Coach Elise Warne. “Our plan is to not peak right now, but be our best in the spring. Our team showed some grit and even though we haven’t had the best weather, that did not faze us.”
Up Next: William Penn, which will start its off-season training soon, will resume playing next March.
