Jerry Shipley, 81, What Cheer, died Wednesday, August 3, 2022. Jerry Dean Shipley was born December 31, 1940 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Joe and Wilma Leathers Shipley.

Jerry grew up around Delta where he attended North and South Honey Grove Country Schools until the eighth grade. Jerry later graduated from Delta High School in 1960.

Jerry was united in marriage to Linda Witt on June 23, 1961 at What Cheer United Methodist Church. To this union three daughters were born, Brenda Lee, Lisa Ann, and Marcy Jo.

The couple made their home in What Cheer for fifty years during which time Jerry worked for Vern Andeway, Ab Walters, and at the Pottery until it closed in 1963. Jerry also worked for Norris Construction Company, Kasers, Martin Maritta and Douds Stone until eventually retiring in 2004.

Jerry was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Nascar fan, but above all Jerry enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s many sporting events.

He is survived by the mother of his three daughters, Linda Shipley; three daughters: Brenda (& Chris) Knust, Lisa (& Jason) McKay, and Marcy (& Derrick) McKay; a sister, Loretta Mewes; his grandchildren: Amanda (& Aaron) Russell, Daniel (& Jacki) Knust, Tyler Knust, Cameron (& Hannah) Knust, Emily (& Cody) Gott, Cole McKay, Caden McKay, and Madison McKay; his great-grandchildren: Carver Russell, Tate Russell, Wyatt Gott, Noah Knust, and Brooks Knust. He also leaves behind a special friend, Carol Benson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Kenneth, Rick, and Leonard Shipley; a sister, Shirley Shipley; and a brother-in-law, Donald Mewes.

Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm on Saturday and last until the time of service.
Burial will be in the McFarlan Cemetery near What Cheer.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the family.
