Gertrude Ann Ahn, age 92, of Albia, IA, passed away on Monday, August 1, 2022, at her home, surrounded by her loved ones, under the care of EveryStep Hospice. Gertrude was born on October 19, 1929, in Lovilia, IA, to Sydney “Bud” and Anna (Sereg) McCombs and was the oldest of 6 children.

Gertrude grew up attending school in Albia, graduating from the Albia High School in 1948, at the age of 19.

On May 20, 1948, (2 days after graduating from high school), she was united in marriage to Albert “Tobe” Ahn and to this union, 2 daughters, Judy and Trudy, were born. Gertrude and Tobe shared 62 years of marriage prior to his passing on November 18, 2010.

Gertrude worked at the United Telephone Company for 6 years before going to work at Chicago Rivet, where she worked for 23 years before her retirement.

Gertrude and Tobe enjoyed traveling, taking trips with family each year to the Ozarks to go boating, and traveling with friends to places such as Jamaica, Mexico, and the Bahamas. She took each grandchild on vacation and she once won a dance competition while in the Bahamas at the age of 75. She and Tobe loved to dance, especially square dancing. They were members of many clubs, including the Eagles, American Legion, and the Elks.

Gertrude took pride in her yard and red geraniums, earning Yard of the Week in 1984. She was an excellent cook, known for her razonkies and homemade noodles. She was always a solid sounding board for advice and her kitchen table provided many therapy sessions. Gertrude’s family was her true joy in life, especially her grandchildren, whom she always sang, “You Are My Sunshine” to.

Gertrude is survived by her children: Judy (& Shawn Bradshaw) Ahn, Trudy McDowell, Jimmy Ahn, and Linda Fall; 4 grandchildren: Josh (& Josie) Smith, Sarah (& Derek) Peine, Angie (& Shawn) Reeves, and Mendy (& T.J.) Weigand; her great grandchildren: Nick, Max, Izzy, and Gus Peine, Miles, Phobe and Trey Reeves, Gabe Weigand, and Gage (& Allie), Drew (& Talia), Jaycee, Grayson, and Clayton Smith; 2 great-great grandchildren, Ryder and Fern Smith; 2 sisters, Lucille (& Harry) Volkman and Ruth Larson; 2 brothers, Ronnie McCombs and John (& Marlene) McCombs; a special sister-in-law, JoAnn Ahn; and her “special angel”, Kandus Jellison from EveryStep Hospice.

Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Tobe; her parents, Sydney and Anna McCombs; a sister, Dorothy Shaw; and a brother, Bob McCombs.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 5, 2022, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Gertrude’s family present to greet family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 5, 2022, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Pastor Roger Henry officiating.

Burial will follow services at Oak View Cemetery in Albia.

An open memorial has been established to be determined at a later date.
