United Way Of Mahaska County Gearing Up For Day Of Caring And BINGO

August 20th, 2022

Oskaloosa, Iowa – It’s a busy time for the United Way of Mahaska County staff.

They recently completed giving out approximately 500 backpacks filled with needed supplies for students in the county.

The next big project for them is the annual Day of Caring which will take place on September 8th, 2022. Registration to volunteer closes on August 29th, 2022.

There are volunteer options for morning, afternoon, or all-day projects.

The number of projects that can be tackled depends on how many volunteers sign up to participate.

I asked Michella Friesen, United Way of Mahaska County Director, who benefits the most from the Day of Caring. Those individuals whose projects are being tended to or the volunteers helping to make it happen.

“I would say it’s very mutual because the volunteers come away with their bucket filled with volunteering. It’s just so good for the soul,” Friesen said. “Then you listen to the families or the organizations that have been impacted by the volunteer work. It’s amazing to watch both sides and how it is just a wonderful fit for everybody on that day.”

Even simple projects like putting in an access ramp can significantly impact people’s lives. For example, Friesen said that such a past project proved to be “life-changing” for a family.

“We went to one lady’s house and trimmed her trees. She could not stop talking about how helpful this was for her,” Friesen shared.

On September 9th, United Way of Mahaska County will be holding BINGO Ball at the Penn Central Mall with BINGO beginning at 6:15 pm. Doors open at 5:30 pm.

This family-friendly night is $30 per person or $200 per table of 8, and tickets can be purchased in advance at the United Way office.

The evening is superhero themed, and there will be prizes for the best superhero costume.

This event will be a part of the group’s fundraising effort that takes place yearly.

United Way of Mahaska County is looking to raise $350,000.00, with the money going toward the group’s initiatives, such as the backpack program, and helping to provide funds for other local non-profits.
