Randy Lee Long, age 63, of Avery, IA, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2022, at his home under the care of Care Initiatives Hospice. Randy was born on August 10, 1958, in Ottumwa, IA, to George O’Brain and Daisy Marie (Davis) Long.

Randy was raised in Davis County, attending school in Bloomfield and then attended Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa where he obtained a degree in Diesel Mechanics.

On August 26, 1983, Randy was united in marriage to Crystal Kay Simons in Fort Dodge, IA. Randy and Crystal shared nearly 40 years together prior to his passing.

Randy worked at Henderson Implement outside of Agency until the age of 18 and then worked clean up at Hormel in Ottumwa. Randy went to work for Dubois Sanitation for 12 years, which took him to Wisconsin, Colorado, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and then back to Iowa. His favorite plant to work in was Beef of America in Omaha. On Thanksgiving Day in 1992, Randy moved to Avery and went to work as a bartender in Eddyville as well as doing construction work with Robert Barker. Randy then bought his uncle’s business which did contract work for SIEDA, and named it R & R Contractors. He retired in 2004.

Randy enjoyed being outdoors and was an avid deer hunter with both his bow and his muzzle loader. He was an excellent fisherman, especially of catfish, catching numerous catfish over 80 pounds. Randy’s true joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Randy is survived by his wife, Crystal; 4 children, Leo (& Brooke) Long, Connie Tuigong, Jeremy (& Cindy) Simons, and April Byrd; 14 grandchildren: Brittany, Xavier, Drake, Jenna, Avery, Isiaih, Elijiah, Savannah, Jeffery, Breanna, Trenton, Ashlyn, Nicholas, and Dylan; and 3 great grandchildren: Zahari, Zelayia, and Kaiser. He is also survived by his best friends, Craig Steel and Grant Troxel.

Randy was preceded in death by his parents, George and Daisy Long; and his grandparents: Easter (Young) Long, Slim Long, James Davis and Claria (Bough) Davis.

Per Randy’s wishes, his body has been cremated and no services are planned at this time. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
