Linahon goes 3-0 for Central wrestlers
DUBUQUE—Gage Linahon (sophomore, Newton) rolled through a 3-0 day as the Central College wrestling team won two of three matches Saturday at the American Rivers Duals.
The Dutch improved to 8-4 overall and 3-4 in the league, leaving them in fourth place. After getting bounced by No. 1-ranked Wartburg College 39-3, Central was a 30-12 winner over the University of Dubuque and a 29-3 victor over Buena Vista University.
Linahon, now 20-5, got Central’s lone points against Wartburg (12-1 overall, 9-0 conference) with an 8-3 win at 197 pounds. He posted a 13-2 major decision against Dubuque and a 12-4 major against Buena Vista.
“Gage had a great day,” coach Eric Van Kley said. “He just wrestled really, really solid. He’s continued to get better as the year goes on.”
Despite the lopsided score against Wartburg, Van Kley liked his team’s effort throughout the day.
“The guys wrestled really tough in all three matches,” he said. “Even in the first match, going against the No. 1 team in the country, I thought our guys battled. At 149, Duncan Delzell (sophomore, Burlington) got a takedown against (Kristian) Rumph, the No. 1 guy in the country and Peyton Hammerich (junior, Princeton, Ill.), same thing, wrestling the No. 1 guy and took him down. I think that aggressiveness and toughness kind of carried throughout the day, especially in the Dubuque dual. I was proud of our guys.”
The day marked the return to the lineup for a pair of ranked wrestlers. Shandon Akeo (5th-year, Honolulu, Hawaii, Kapolei HS) is No. 3 at 125 pounds and Rob Areyano (senior, Selma, Calif.) is 10th at 149. Akeo was 2-0 for the day and Areyano was 1-0 as they work their way back into shape after being sidelined for health and safety protocols.
“It was good to have Rob and Shandon back in the lineup,” Van Kley said.
Central competes in the Loras Open at Dubuque at 9 a.m. next Saturday. The Dutch will send primarily younger and reserve wrestlers while the starters ramp up the intensity in the practice room.
“This really needs to be a big week of training for them and just get some good work done in the room,” Van Kley said.
