Dan Patton, 77 of New Sharon passed away Sunday, January 16, 2022 in Mission, Texas. Dan Edwin “General” Patton, the son of Lyle and Ruth (Deucore) Patton, was born on October 20, 1944 in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Danny attended Deep River Schools until the 6th grade when his family moved to New Sharon and graduated from North Mahaska High School in 1962.
After high school, he worked for Vermeer Manufacturing for a few years before enlisting with the United States Army in 1966.
Danny was first a lifeguard with the Army before he was shipped overseas to Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. During his time overseas, he was a deep-sea diver where he was involved in several rescue missions. He was then honorably discharged in 1968.
On February 21, 1969, Danny was united in marriage to Cathy Hoyt. In January of 1975, Danny enlisted with the National Guard where he served as a tank commander, retiring in 1994.
Over the years, Danny worked for Farmhand, Donaldson’s, Laurel DeJong as a farmhand, Ray Woods, Big W, L & R and Winger retiring in 2005 at the age of 61. Following retirement, Danny mowed at Prairie Knolls Country Club and worked part time at the New Sharon Ice Cream Factory.
Danny enjoyed riding his Harley, mowing the golf course, was an avid golfer; where he won the men’s league two years in a row. Above all, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He also enjoyed riding his bicycle and rode in RAGBRAI for the first time at age 70 then had hip surgery and rode it again at the age of 72. Danny was a member of the Coffin-Miller American Legion Post #446 and the Prairie Knolls Country Club. Prior member of the New Sharon Fire and Rescue.
His legacy will be honored by his wife, Cathy Patton of New Sharon; his son, Dane (Cindy) Patton of New Sharon; his daughter, Bethany (Avery) Gatton of New Sharon; five grandchildren: Brett (Danie) Fisher, Katie Gilman, Kayla Gilman, Chase Patton and Cheyenne (Dylan) Comstock; two great grandchildren, Braxton and Addisyn Fisher; Step great grandchildren: Keaton, Karsen, Wesley, Addilyn, Reaksmey, Liam and Raymond.
Danny was preceded in death by his parents, Lyle and Ruth Patton; a daughter, Michaela; father-in-law, Jack Hoyt; and son-in-law, Derrick Gilman.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, January 29, 2022 at the New Sharon United Methodist Church.
Burial will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery.
Visitation will begin after 12:00 pm Friday, January 28, 2022 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with the family present from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
