Dutch triumph on wrestling mats at Augustana

ROCK ISLAND, ILL. — Winning five matches in bonus-point fashion, the Central College wrestling team rolled to a 30-11 win at Augustana College (Ill.) Thursday night.

Central (4-2) finished with a flurry at the three heaviest weight classes against the Vikings (0-5). Peyton Hammerich (junior, Princeton, Ill.) secured a 10-0 major decision at 184 pounds. Gage Linahon (sophomore, Newton) had a 25-10 technical fall at 197 pounds and Samuel Zook (senior, Oak Harbor, Wash.) had a fall at the 3:27 mark of his 285-pound match

“Peyton had a big win for us tonight,” coach Eric Van Kley said “It was a close match before he threw his guy on his back at the end of the first period and then he broke it open after that.

“Peyton had a great match which led into Gabe which led into Zook. It was a great way to finish the night.”

Brock Beck’s (sophomore, Grinnell) 17-1 technical fall at 141 pounds and Luke Condy’s (junior, Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers HS) 10-1 major decision at 157 pounds gave Central two more bonus-point wins.

Duncan Delzell (sophomore, 149 pounds, Burlington) also had a 9-2 decision and Colby Tool (freshman, 165 pounds, Reasnor, PCM HS) was a 4-0 winner.

“Anytime you can show some depth and wrestle some new guys it’s good,” Van Kley said. “There were things we did well tonight and things we’ve got to do a better job on but I thought our overall effort was pretty good.”

Central is headed to the MSOE Invitational in Milwaukee on Saturday starting at 9 a.m.

“It’s one of better tournaments we go to all year,” Van Kley said. “Our team is really looking forward to that.”
