Virginia “Ginger” Lee Henderson, age 84, of Albia, passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, IA. Ginger was born on January 13, 1937, in Grayville, IL, to Harley D. and Emma (Luxenburger) Gabbert.
Ginger grew up attending school and graduated from high school in Los Angeles, California.
After high school, Ginger met George Lee Henderson while he was in the United States Air Force. George brought Ginger back to Albia with him and they were united in marriage on August 26, 1962, at the Baptist Temple in Ottumwa, IA. Ginger and George shared 48 years of marriage prior to George’s passing on September 2, 2010.
In 1963, Ginger went to work at Trophy Glove in Albia. She worked there for many years and was instrumental in designing many prototypes of gloves to be used by the military.
Ginger enjoyed reading and writing poetry. She enjoyed being outdoors and gardening. She was artsy and very talented at many things including crocheting, knitting, sewing, painting, and doing crafts. Ginger loved to spend time with her family and friends and treasured taking care of her grandchildren.
Ginger is survived by her children: Anita Cherry, Howard (Tammy) Cherry, Tommie (Wayne) Beck, and Kim (Joe) Harrison; five grandchildren: Kevin (Shannon) Henderson, Matt Henderson, Sara (Jeremy) Weeks, David (Sunny) Girard, and Crystal (Ryan) Gilmore; and 9 great grandchildren: Jade, Kayden, Charlie, and Lucy Henderson, Lyndie Gilmore, Jade, Gabby, and Grace Girard, and Adam Arredondo. Ginger is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and good friends.
Ginger was preceded in death by her husband, George Henderson; her parents, Harley and Emma Gabbert; a son, George Mitchell Henderson; a daughter, Jennie Baer; and siblings, Margaret McNew, Evelyn Tupper, and Harley David Gabbert Jr. in infancy.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 25, 2021, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Ginger’s family present from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. to greet family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Jeremy Weeks and Crystal James co-officiating.
Burial will follow services at Cuba Cemetery in rural Albia.
A memorial has been established to the Welcome Home Soldier Memorial in Albia.
