Vernon Readshaw, 85 of New Sharon, passed away Thursday morning, December 2, 2021 at the Gardens of Cedar Rapids Retirement Community and Care Center. Vernon William Readshaw, the son of Claude and Florence (Summers) Readshaw, was born on October 8, 1936 in Medicine Lodge, Kansas.
Vernon was a 1954 graduate of New Sharon High School.
Following high school, Vernon volunteered for the United States Army serving two years.
On June 1, 1958, Vernon was united in marriage to Coleen Moore at the United Methodist Church in New Sharon. To this union four sons were born, Rocky Dean, David, Michael and Mark. Vernon and Coleen raised their family in New Sharon.
Vernon worked at Maytag for a little while, then was an electrician, he worked on cars and finally in 1961, Vernon began working for the United States Postal service where he was a rural mail carrier. Vernon delivered mail for over 45 years retiring in 2006.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, loved having a big garden, tinkering and playing cards. He was a member of the New Sharon First Christian Church and the Rural Mail Carrier Association.
His legacy will be honored by his wife of 63 years, Coleen; his children, David Readshaw of New Sharon, Michael (Renea) Readshaw of Cedar Rapids and Mark (Debora) Readshaw of Fairfax; four grandchildren, Whitney Readshaw of Cedar Rapids, Courtney Readshaw of Cedar Rapids, Sierra (Nick) Belluchi of Tiffin and Jacy Chiaramonte of Cedar Falls; four great grandchildren, Briella, Kohen, Nevaeh, Jakovi and one on the way; a sister-in-law Kay Readshaw; a brother, Robert (Sherry) Readshaw of Quincy, IL and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy, Rocky Dean Readshaw and a brother, Jack Readshaw.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am Monday, December 6, 2021 at the Lighthouse Church, formerly known as the New Sharon First Christian Church.
Burial with military rites will be held in the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Sunday, December 5, 2021 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family.
