John Westercamp, 88 of Grinnell and formerly of Barnes City passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. John Virgil Westercamp, the son of John and Lillian (Moore) Westercamp, was born on June 5, 1933 on the family farm near Barnes City, Iowa.
Following his father’s death when he was 5, John helped out on the family farm at a young age.
John graduated from Barnes City High School in 1950 and then attended Iowa State University for a short time before returning home to help out on the farm.
On October 3, 1952, John was united in marriage to Elizabeth “Betty” Draughn in the Oskaloosa Methodist Chapel. To this union three children were born, Ronald, Scott and Crystal.
John and Betty continued to farm in the Barnes City area until 1980 when John began working for the Barnes City COOP driving a fuel truck for the next 14 years. Then for the next six years, John delivered new campers all over the country retiring in 2000.
John and Betty moved to Seeland Park in Grinnell in 2005. Family was very important to John and he enjoyed spending time with them. He was very active in the Barnes City Community Church and had an important role on the addition of the church building. John always wanted to fly and took flying lessons for a short time.
John’s legacy will be honored by his wife, Elizabeth Westercamp of Grinnell; his three children: Ronald Westercamp of Ankeny, Scott (& Carol) Westercamp of Ankeny and Crystal (& Roger) Lyddon of Alabama; his 16 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; a great-great grandchild on the way; and many other friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald Westercamp in infancy; a granddaughter, Darcy Westercamp; and three great grandchildren, Baby Kesling, Shay Kesling and Liam Kesling.
Memorial services will begin at 10:30 am Saturday, July 31, 2021 at the Barnes City Community Life Church.
Visitation/Luncheon will follow the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
Burial will be held in the Barnes City Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Barnes City Community Life Church or the Seeland Park.
