Leon Hawley, 90, of Indianola and formerly of Fremont, died Saturday, July 24, 2021, at his home in Indianola. He was born January 16, 1931, on the Hawley Homestead in Phillips County, Kansas to Glenn and Rada Horn Hawley.

Leon attended country school and elementary school in Phillipsburg, Kansas, before the family moved to the Richland, Iowa, area where he attended various rural schools, Ollie Community School and then graduated from Richland High in 1948.

During high school Leon worked at Flander’s Hatchery in Richland and Keota. He also worked at Flander’s locker plant in Brighton.

Leon served in the USAF from 1949-1953. While in the service he spent three years in Germany.

Upon his discharge from the Air Force, Leon owned and operated the Standard Oil Gas Station in Richland for a time. He then went to work at what is now Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids. He was also enrolled in the University of Iowa studying accounting there for three years.

In 1957 he was united in marriage to Carol Smith in the Friends Church in Richland.

They moved to Iowa City where he worked for the Sears and Roebuck Company. In 1965, he left Sears and moved to Boulder, Colorado and began working for a utility company, Public Service Co. of Colorado. He retired from there in 1994. Leon and Carol returned to Ottumwa and Fremont after retiring to be near family.

Leon was an active member of Gateway Nazarene Church in Oskaloosa. A past member of the Masonic Lodge and American Legion. He enjoyed traveling and working in his woodshop.

His family includes his three children: Felice (& Charlie) Foster of Longmont, Colorado, Bart (& Michelle) Hawley of Indianola, and Troy (& Tricia) Hawley of Hedrick; five grandchildren: Melissa (& Ben) Penfold and Hannah Foster all of Longmont, Colorado, Kimberly Hawley of West Des Moines, Rebecca Hawley of Hedrick, and Andrew (& Megan) Hawley of Bondurant; a great grandchild, Briggs Penfold; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife Carol, Leon was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Alan Hawley; two sisters, Doris Hawley and Phyllis Gott.

A graveside memorial service and burial will be held Saturday, July 31, 2021, at 10:30 a.m. in the Richland Friends Cemetery in Richland, Iowa, with Reverend Darren Melton officiating.
As was Leon’s wish his body has been cremated and no visitation is planned. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorial may be made to Deaf Missions in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
