Carol Jean Taylor, 62, of Oskaloosa died at her home in Oskaloosa surrounded by her family under the care of Hospice of the Midwest on Tuesday, July 20, 2021. Carol was born June 3, 1959, in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Stanley E. and Thelma R. Short Taylor.
Carol graduated from West High School in Waterloo, Iowa, with the class of 1977. Following graduation, she worked various jobs in Waterloo.
Carol was united in marriage to Curtis Johnson and later divorced.
In 1982, she moved to Moberly, Missouri. She was married to Robert Botteron. To this union a daughter Amanda was born. Carol and Robert later divorced.
In Missouri she decided to further her education and enrolled at Moberly Missouri Community College. She completed her A.A. there and continued her education by moving to Oskaloosa and enrolling at William Penn College (now William Penn University). In 1994, she became the first in her family to earn her college degree, graduating from William Penn with a degree in Liberal Arts.
Following graduation, Carol used her degree and her desire to help people by working as a social worker in Southern Iowa. She was proud of the help she provided families through her work with SEIDA, First Resources, and D.H.S. Due to ill health, she was forced to retire from her social work. She did work various part time jobs in retirement.
Carol enjoyed working in her yard, tending to her garden, and arranging her yard decorations. She was also an avid collector. She loved to treasure hunt in antique shops always looking for antique jewelry, rooster decorations, and metal signs. Her other favorite thing to collect was Mickey Mouse memorabilia. Carol had a deep desire to help people in need, she found great peace and help in surrounding herself with her friends she met in A.A. She was very active in attending meetings and events all over Southeast, Iowa.
Her family includes her daughter Amanda Botteron of Oskaloosa; two grandchildren, Rodney and Sierra Chisolm; a brother, Steve (& Kathy) Taylor of Cedar Falls; two sisters, Judy Toepfer of Waterloo and Joyce Meredith of Ottumwa; six “First Gens” (nieces and nephews); ten “Second Gens” (great nieces and nephews); and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Kenneth Taylor; a brother-in-law, Dean Toepfer; and a nephew, Christopher Toepfer.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 24, 2021, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa.
As was Carol’s wish her body will be cremated following the funeral service. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family present will be held from 11 a.m. until service time at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
