Kirkland “Kirk” Edward Smead-McLeod, age 22, of Knoxville, IA, passed away on Friday, June 4, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA.

Kirk was born on June 6, 1998, in Ottumwa, Iowa.

He grew up and attended schools in Knoxville, Iowa.

Kirk enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing, mudding, and being on the boat. He liked cows and loved to travel. He was a movie enthusiast, especially older movies and was a fan of Jim Carey, Chris Farley, and Jack Black.

Kirk is survived by his parents, Jenifer and Tommy Gillespie; his grandparents, Jack and Mary Gillespie; his God parents, Kendra Hiatt and Hunter Gist; his best friend, Owen Hiatt; and his 2 dogs, Deuce and Jericho. Kirk is also survived by several great aunts and uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, David and Debbie Smead; his great grandparents, Ruth and Delmar Clark and Helen Gillespie; and an aunt, Nikki Gillespie.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11, 2021, at the Tharp Funeral Home in Albia, with Kirk’s family present to greet family and friends.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

An open memorial has been established to the family.
