Mary Louise Meier
September 20, 1929 – March 6, 2021
Pella (Hedrick, Fremont), Iowa | Age 91

Mary Louise Meier, 91, of Pella and formerly of Hedrick and Fremont, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, March 6, 2021, while being cared for at the Wesley Life Cottages in Pella. She was born September 20, 1929, south of Fremont the daughter of Charles and Bertha Boord Porter.

When Mary was two months old her mother Bertha passed away, leaving six other children ages 2-15. In the wake of the tragedy of losing her mother, Mary was adopted by her mother’s brother and his wife, Dewey and Alice Boord.

In high school at Hedrick, Iowa, Mary met the love of her life Eugene Meier. Following high school, the two of them were married on February 26, 1950.

The couple farmed for two years northwest of Hedrick before moving to their farm south of Fremont. They lived on and farmed that farm for over 60 years. In farming time Mary was Gene’s “hired lady” working the ground in the spring and helping with the harvest in the fall. She had a huge garden and raised one hundred chickens for butcher each year.

God gave them two children, Dennis Wayne born June 4, 1951, and Joy Louise born March 20, 1953. Although Mary attended church her whole life, her children led her into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ in the late 1960’s.

The couple retired from farming in 1992 but continued to live on the farm until moving to Pella in March of 2011. She loved to feed the birds and enjoyed tending to her flower beds. She and Gene enjoyed traveling together and did make it to all fifty states. They also enjoyed traveling with some of Mary’s siblings, they referred to themselves as the “Suburban Seven” as the Suburban was their preferred method of travel and all seven of them could fit.

Mary was a member of Pella Church of the Nazarene. She still attended the CCC Club and played cards once a month with friends from Fremont, even after they moved to Pella. She enjoyed embroidery and crocheting. As technology advanced so did Mary, she enjoyed having a Kindle Fire and read many books and played many games on that device. It was especially nice on nights that she would get very-little sleep due to her RLS. Her greatest joy was when she could get as many of her family together as possible at one time. On September 15, 2018, Mary moved into the Cottages in Pella due to complications with a stroke.

Mary leaves behind her husband of 71 years, Gene Meier of Pella; a son, Dennis Meier of Mounment, Colorado; a daughter, Joy (& Mark) Rhinehart of Pella; five grandchildren: Josh (& Missy) Rhinehart of Pella, Jennifer (& Sean) Nathaniel of Austin, Texas, Jeff Rhinehart of Schertz, Texas, Scott (& Cassie) Meier of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Brian (& Christena) Meier of Kuna, Idaho; fourteen great grandchildren; a sister, Martha Wood; a half-brother, John (& Jacquie) Porter; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by both sets of parents; a daughter in law, Diane Meier; three sisters: Reta Greer, Alice Yenger, and Louise Shadley; two brothers, Gerald Porter and George Porter; a half-sister, Charlotte Reneau; a half-brother, Tom (& Gertrude) Porter.
