WPU Runner-Up at Second Iowa Conference 100-100-100

Waukee–The Statesmen shotgun sports teams hit the range yet again over the weekend, competing at the second Iowa Conference 100-100-100 of the fall Saturday.

William Penn placed second out of six teams with 1,293 targets hit out of 1,500 total. Grand View nipped the navy and gold by 10 targets (1,303) for the team crown.

The event consisted of 100 shots each of Skeet, Sporting Clays, and Trap.

The day opened with WPU going 458-for-500 in Skeet as Christopher Berkshire-Lewis (So., Kansas City, Mo., Business Management) finished 97-for-100.

Bryon Baca (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) was next at 93-for-100, while Maclane Heinen (Fr., Pella, Iowa, Business Management) (91-for-100) and Gideon Boender (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa) (90-for-100) also eclipsed 90 hit targets. John Anderson (So., Morrison, Ill., Biology) wrapped up the scoring at 87-for-100.

In Sporting Clays, Heinen was the top shooter at 81-for-100, while Berkshire-Lewis was right behind him at 80-for-100. Anderson (69-for-100), Quinton Casteel (Jr., Moravia, Iowa) (68-for-100), and Boender (66-for-100) were also in WPU’s top five. The team finished at 364-for-500.

Heinen guided the navy and gold in Trap as well, missing just once in 100 shots (he was 271-for-300 overall). Anderson concluded a strong day with a score of 95-for-100, while Baca and Berskhire-Lewis both recorded marks of 93-for-100. Jarrett DeKoning (Jr., Grinnell, Iowa) got into the top five as well at 91-for-100. Overall, WPU was 471-for-500 in the discipline.

“After a very long and cold day, we came up 10 targets short of the team win out of 1,500 total shots,” Head Coach Steve Heaton said. “We did not shoot to our potential, but we never gave up! I am happy how our student-athletes handled the second-place finish as they joined together afterwards to decide what they needed to do different at the next practice to improve.”

Next Up: William Penn takes a few weeks off before returning to Waukee on November 14 to conclude the fall season with its third Iowa Conference 100-100-100 competition.
