William Penn Takes Fifth in Second Event of Year
Moravia–The Statesmen men’s golf team returned to the links Monday for a 36-hole, one-day event and produced solid results as it competed at The W at The Preserve Tournament hosted by Indian Hills CC.
WPU finished fifth out of eight teams with a two-round score of 598 (300-298) at The Preserve at Rathbun Lake Golf Course, a par-72 track. Host Indian Hills CC ran away with the title at 14-under par 562 (284-278). The Warriors had the top five scores and six of the top seven; Max Hartmann was the event’s individual medalist at five-under 139 (68-71).
The Statesmen were not excluded from low scores as three of the 10 posted varsity rounds were at or under par.
Spencer Tucker (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) guided the navy and gold, tying for 10th (47 total participants) at 145 (73-72).
Juan Lugo (So., Lecheria, Venezuela, Business Management) was in the top 15 as well, tying for 15th at 148 (72-76).
Austin Hafner (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa) was on both ends of the spectrum Monday, opening with an 80, but quickly rebounding for William Penn’s lowest round at one-under 71. He tied for 23rd at 151.
Jace Mueller (Jr., Burlington, Iowa) tied for 28th at 154 (75-79), while Andrew Lallier (Jr., Algona, Iowa) rounded out the varsity in 37th place at 164 (80-84).
David Decker (Grad., Peyton, Colo., Master’s of Sports Management) headlined the reserve team’s scoring as he was 36th at 163 (86-77), while Danny McQuade (Jr., Tucson, Ariz.) also cleared 80 in one of his rounds. McQuade tied for 38th at 167 (89-78).
Next Up: WPU travels to Silvis, Ill. next Monday and Tuesday to compete in the NAIA Preview. Play will be contested at TPC Deere Run Golf Course.
