Walter Harbert Jr., 95 formerly of Deep River, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, June 6, 2020 at Sunnyview Care Center in Ankeny. Walter Roscoe Harbert Jr. was born on January 24, 1925 near Deep River to Walter & Martha (Nicholas) Harbert.
Walter went to school at Tilton, Gibson and graduated from Thornburg in 1943.
Walter enlisted in the US Marines in 1943 and served in WWII in Peleliu, Palau Island and Okinawa.
After his honorable discharge from the military, he returned home and farmed.
Walter was united in marriage to Marian Lucille McCullough on August 10, 1946 at the Presbyterian Church in Deep River. To this union two children were born: Danny Alan & Sally Jane.
Walter & Marian farmed near Deep River until 1985, when they moved to Belle Plaine and Walter became a fulltime rural route mail carrier. He retired from the postal service on February 1, 1999.
Marian passed away May, 18, 2013 and Sally passed away June 9, 2019, both from brain cancer. In November 2017, Walter moved to Ankeny with Dan & Darla.
Walter was a member of The United Christian Church of Deep River and the Morrison-Schrader American Legion Post #296 of Deep River.
Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Dan (& Darla) Harbert of Ankeny; son-in-law, Loren Hall of Millersburg, IA; Grandchildren: Marcus (& Rochelle) Harbert, Andrea (& Tim) Cerwinske, Shari (& Josh) Reed, Christopher (& Tori) Harbert, Matthew (& Amy) Harbert, and Nicholas (& Chelsi) Harbert; Great grandchildren: Ethan Reed, Andrew Reed, Colin Harbert, Ayden Reed, Miles Harbert, Alexis Harbert, Abby Cerwinske, Emma Cerwinske, Audrey Harbert, Briar Harbert, Mila Harbert, Avy Harbert, and Blake Harbert; step-grandchildren: Faith Briones & Summer DeJesus; his brother, Tom (& Joann) Harbert; and sister-in-law, Joyce McCullough.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Walter & Martha Harbert; his wife of over 66 years, Marian; daughter, Sally Hall; sister, Elizabeth; and brothers: William, Robert and Idwal.
Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in Montezuma and will be livestreamed on the Holland-Coble Funeral Home’s Facebook page.
Burial with military rites will be held in the Golden Rod Cemetery in Deep River.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, a reception and visitation will be held at a later time in the Deep River Community Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Morrsion-Schrader American Legion Post #296 or the Deep River Christian Church.
