Former All-American Jones Returning to Iowa for G League Game
Oskaloosa–Though he played only one year at William Penn, Torren Jones endeared himself to the Statesmen community with his play as he dominated opponents. Jones recently took another step in his career path by signing with the NBA G League’s Santa Cruz Warriors, the affiliate for the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. In addition, the WPU grad will be returning to Iowa this Sunday as the Warriors take on the Iowa Wolves in Des Moines.
Jones had a memorable campaign in 2016-2017 as part of the team that went 33-4 overall and reached the NAIA semifinals after winning both Heart of America Athletic Conference titles. Jones played in every game for the Statesmen, averaging 20.4 points and 12.3 rebounds per game, while shooting 56.5% from the field. A First-Team All-American, he was also the Heart’s Player and Newcomer of the Year. Nationally, Jones ranked in the top 10 in seven different statistical categories.
Following his time in the navy and gold, Jones earned tryouts with several NBA squads as well as the Agua Caliente Clippers, the G League team for the L.A. Clippers. However, he ended up signing a deal to play with OHOD, a club in Saudi Arabia. After playing there, he moved to another continent to play with the Southern Vale Homes Bandits in Australia. There, he averaged just less than 20 points and almost 14 boards per game.
Jones’ play again caught the attention of scouts and the Santa Cruz outfit called him back to the States. He played four games for them at the beginning of the season and recently rejoined the team. He has put up 6.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in his limited time with Santa Cruz this season.
Fans of Jones are fortunate that he rejoined the team now, as they started a Midwest road trip on Wednesday. The Warriors will play in Sioux Falls, S.D. Friday and then head to Des Moines for their game against the Wolves Sunday. It will be a 1 p.m. tip-off at Wells Fargo Arena.
