Marianne Main, 88, of Knoxville died Sunday, January 19, 2020, at West Ridge Specialty Care Center in Knoxville, Iowa. She was born January 12, 1932, in Rochester, Minnesota, the daughter of Carlos and Ruth Simmons Van Nostrand. Marianne graduated from Oskaloosa High School. On August 20, 1950, she was united in marriage to David T. Main in Oskaloosa. Early in their marriage they moved to Marshalltown. She went on to complete beauty school in Marshalltown. During their time there Marianne owned and operated a beauty salon. She had an entrepreneurial spirit led her to earning her real estate license and selling homes. She also operated Marianne’s Cakes out of her home, baking countless wedding, birthday, and anniversary cakes. Marianne felt strongly about being involved in her community. She gave selflessly of her time and talents to many organizations and community efforts over the years. She and David moved to Florida roe retirement and while there they traveled the United States and worked as judges at antique car shows. In October of 2015, David died after over 65 years of marriage. Marianne later moved to Knoxville to be closer to her daughter.

Her family includes her daughter and her husband, Deborah and Dale Gyolai of Knoxville; four grandchildren, Melissa (Ben) Yoder, James (Melissa) Main, Wendy (Keith) Kelsey, and Chad Messerli; ten great grandchildren, Abigail, Byron, and Riley Yoder; Devon, Jackson, and Jude Main; Shiphrah and Gideon Kelsey; Raiden and Karleigh Messerli; two sisters, Pat Baker of Jamestown, North Carolina, and Ruthanne (Gale) Sherman of Starkville, Mississippi; a sister in law, Gayle Van Nostrand of Bloomington, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Marianne was preceded in death by her parents; a son, David Main; a son in law, Martin Messerli; two daughters in law, Sue Main and Cheri Main; a grandson, John Main; a brother, Carlos Van Nostrand; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis (Robert) Straughn.

As was Marianne’s wish, her body has been cremated. A celebration of life ceremony will be held at a later date. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
