Alfred “Gene” Eugene Waddell, Jr., 77, of rural Leighton, died Tuesday, October 22, 2019, at his home. He was born September 1, 1942, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of Alfred Eugene and Helen DeGeest Waddell, Sr.
Gene graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1960. Following high school, he worked various jobs in Oskaloosa.
On June 2, 1964, he was united in marriage to Donna P. Kamerick at Eddyville, Iowa. On October 16, 2006, Donna preceded Gene in death after over 42 years of marriage.
Shortly after they were married Gene joined the United States Air Force. He served as a mechanic on various bases including Hahn Air Force base near Kirchberg, Germany. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1970.
Gene returned to Marion County and went to work with his father-in-law in his television repair shop. In 1974, he started his career at Pella Rolscreen (now Pella Corporation). He worked there in maintenance for over thirty years before retiring. In addition to working at Pella Corp. Gene and his boys owned and operated L&W Tank Cleaning for many years. Gene was a talented electrician, he had Waddell Electric and wired countless houses and buildings in Mahaska County over the years.
Gene enjoyed cruising the neighborhood on his four-wheeler and visiting with his neighbors. He also looked forward to road trips to Missouri and fishing.
Gene’s family includes his three sons: Robert Waddell of rural Leighton, Randy Waddell of Knoxville, and Ryan (& Melinda) Waddell of Leighton; three grandsons: Drew Waddell, Dalton Waddell, and Dylan Waddell; and many brothers and sisters in law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In addition to his wife Donna, Gene was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harold and Mike Waddell; and a nephew, Curt Waddell.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 26, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Todd Rempe officiating.
Burial will be in the Porter Grove Cemetery.
Graveside Military Honors will be given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family present will begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and the family will be present to greet friends and relatives until service time at 10:30 a.m.
Memorials may be made to the Oskaloosa Honor Guard.
