Jaquez Helps Lead William Penn to Sweep of Graceland
Lamoni, Iowa—William Penn women’s volleyball was back on the road on Tuesday night as they traveled to Lamoni to take on Graceland.
The Statesmen (8-9, 3-5 Heart) had their way with the Yellowjackets (5-13, 1-4 Heart) as they swept their Heart foe by the scores of 25-12, 25-22, and 25-17.
The navy and gold got off to a hot start in the match, jumping scoring seven of the first 10 points in the set eventually leading them to a 25-12 win. WPU hit a game-high .440 in the second set to help lead them to a 25-22 victory. Both teams battled back and forth before the Statesmen were able to pull away late in the set. The third was much like the first as William Penn dominated much of the set, jumping out to a 21-9 lead. Despite a late run by the Yellowjackets, the ladies held on for a 25-17 victory, finishing off the sweep.
Overall, WPU outhit Graceland by a large margin .271-.017 due in large part to the efforts of Bebe Jaquez (Jr., Farmington, N.M., Biology) who finished with eight kills while hitting at a .400 clip and Libby Zorn (Jr., Billings, Mont., History) who tallied seven kills and hit .500.
The two-setter duo of Sydney Roush (Jr., Osceola, Wis., Biology) and Annalise Whitcomb (Jr., Humboldt, Kan., Accounting) were tasked with running the offense in this one and both delivered double-digit assist performances. Roush led the team with 15 while Whitcomb added 10 helpers to the mix.
Defensively it was the libero, Cameryn Campbell (Jr., Jefferson City, Mo., Education) who stepped up and played a major role in holding the Yellowjackets to just a .017 hitting percentage. The junior, finished with 19 digs and was flawless on serve-receive committing zero errors.
“I thought our outside hitters were huge for us tonight.” Head Coach Aleesha Cleaver said, “It was really fun to watch a player like Bebe (Alicia) step up and show out like she did. I thought our even distribution on offense was the difference maker in the game. We were able to spread the ball around and it was tough for Graceland to defend. We need to use tonight to propel us into Friday as we’re excited to get back on our home court!”
Next Up: William Penn will return home to play the rival Grand View Vikings on Friday, Sept. 27, at the Penn Activity Center with the match scheduled for 7 p.m.
