Aaarrrggghhh! It’s The End Of Summer Showcase

Family members got the opportunity to see the pirate based creations made during the summer.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The Pirate Summer Art Camp Student Exhibition was held last week at the Oskaloosa Art Center.

The closing was a way to celebrate all of the hard work and talents the students put into their creations during the art camps held at the center over the summer.

Students could then take their creations home with them from the show.

Brant Bollman was one of the instructors during the summer art camps. He also teaches art at North Mahaska.

“It’s just really neat to see everybody’s artwork out,” says Bollman during the reception. “There’s a lot this year that we made.”

Bollman helped students create puppets that were on rods, kind of dancing pirates. “We made parrots that would go on their hand, and then we made the giant uppets”.

The students also did self-portraits as pirates. “We did a lot of fun stuff,” Bollman says.

As an art teacher, Bollman enjoyed watching students continue their creativity through the summer. “This really gives me energy for the school year.”

“I get a lot of ideas from the kids,” Bollman adds. “I mean, it’s really neat to have this small little group for hours. It’s a neat little laboratory to figure things out.”

Those new ideas, generated in a smaller environment, allow Bollman to translate some of those new ideas to the classroom.

Some of those new ideas come from the summer students themselves. “So they’ll show me new things, and then I will take it back to the school and act like I thought it up,” Bollman jokes.

Sara Kargol was another instructor who helped summer students make whales and barnacles out of clay, as well as ships out of paper plates.

“It was just super fun,” said Kargol.

The student’s art was on display in the professional gallery for the entire month of August.

Coming up in the professional gallery is a contemporary clay show that was recently delivered, and will be on display at the Art Center for the months of September and October.
