2021 Mahaska County Garden Challenge

The Mahaska County 4-H Youth Development & Horticulture Programs are offering a Garden Challenge. This challenge is open to any youth in Kindergarten-12th grade or adults ages 18+. Mahaska County Master Gardeners, Mahaska County Extension Council, & Mahaska County Extension Staff are ineligible to participate due to potential conflicts of interest.

Participants are challenged to Learn using resources provided by ISU Extension and Outreach and local gardening experts; Plan their gardens using some type of grid (by hand or electronically); Do – plan, tend to, and take photos of their gardens throughout the growing season; and Share what they have learned in a presentation for their chance to win prizes!

Divisions
Open Children – Current Kindergarten-3rd grade children
Open Youth – Current 4th-12th grade youth
Open Adult – Anyone age 18+

Sub-Divisions: Vegetable Garden, Flower Garden

Garden Types: In-ground, Container

Participants are encouraged to use the resources provided by ISU Extension and Outreach and to visit with local gardening professionals. Garden Plan needs to be completed and Photos must be taken. Before & After photos must be included in the presentation. Finished projects can be a presentation of photos/slides, videos, journals, display boards, etc. All participants must attend the Garden Challenge Presentation on Thursday, September 9 at the Mahaska County Extension office. Each participants will be provided with 5-8 minutes for their presentation. Full details and resources can be found at www.extension.iastate.edu/mahaska.
