The deepest squad in recent history is projected to put up quite a fight in the league as the Statesmen women’s cross country team battles in 2014.

One year ago, William Penn placed last at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships a year ago, but first-year Coach Sean Gosewisch has compiled a longer roster list in plans of moving the navy and gold into a position of contenders.

Most of the talent will be new for WPU, but returners Deja Lewis (So., Spring, Texas, Psychology) and Lilly Walters (So., Boerne, Texas, Exercise Science) should provide good leadership and low times to get the ball rolling early in the season. Both individuals are coming off injury-plagued 2013 campaigns and, if healthy, should be high contributors. Lewis had a season-best 5K time of 20:25, while Walters had a season-low time of 23:16.

Two of the program’s five newcomers have experience at this level with Elizabeth Boyd (So., Windsor Heights, Iowa, Business Management), and Addison Kepner (Jr., Cincinnati, Iowa, Biology) coming in from junior colleges. Guadalupe Gonzalez (Fr., Houston, Texas) performed well at the prep level in the Lonestar State, while Sabrina Avery (Fr., Riverside, Calif.), Ajee Miller (Philadelphia, Pa.), and Cindy Walker (Jr., New Sharon, Iowa, Public Accounting) will add depth as well.

WPU will travel down Highway 92 on August 29 to compete in the season-opening Simpson Bill Buxton Invitational Gallop. An additional five meets will follow, including three outside the state, before the Statesmen go to La Crosse, Wis. to fight for the title. St. Ambrose will be seeking to defend its crown.
