The 16th Annual Youth Outdoor Field Day will be held at the Russell Wildlife Area on Saturday, September 28th. Participants will walk along the Russell Wildlife Area trails to experience some fun and interesting outdoor activities as a family. This year’s activities include: Dutch oven cooking, turkey hunting, monarch butterflies, water safety, archery, bowfishing, .22 rifle and shotgun shooting, and even Oskaloosa’s police K-9 “Duke” will give a search presentation.

Registration forms can be found online at www.mahaskaconservation.com or at the Environmental Learning Center. Early registrations get the best deals for the family! If the registrations are received by September 13, the cost is only $5.00 per person and includes a t-shirt, lunch and admittance to all the fun activities. If registrations are received after September 13 through the day of the event, the cost is $10.00 per person and only includes admittance to the activities.

On the day of the event, the check-in time for pre-registered families and any late registrations will begin at 8:00 am. The activities will begin at 8:30 am and last until noon. Only the demonstration by the Oskaloosa Police K-9 “Duke” will be held at a special time. This demonstration will take place by the picnic shelter at 9:00 am. At noon, families with a lunch ticket will be able to have the hot dog lunch.

Many local organizations and businesses have come together to provide a fun morning for all the families. Our goal is to connect kids and their families with the outdoors. We hope you can be a part of it!

The Russell Wildlife Area is located five miles north of Oskaloosa at 2254 – 200th Street, New Sharon, IA. If you have questions, contact the Mahaska County Conservation Board at (641)673-9327 ext. 2.
