Wong a finalist for Central Iowa award

PELLA—Central College football all-America honoree Shane Wong (senior, Pleasant Hill, Southeast Polk HS) is a finalist for College/University Male Athlete of the Year in the Central Iowa Sports Awards.

Fans can participate in online voting once a day through February 18 at www.SeeDesMoines.com/CISA. Registration is required prior to voting.

The Des Moines Area Sports Commission, part of the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau, sponsors the awards which recognize individuals and teams who have pursued athletic excellence with honor in 2010. The activities must have occurred during 2010 within a 75-mile radius of Principal Park in Des Moines. Award winners will be named at the CISA banquet Sunday, Feb. 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the Meadows Ballroom at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona.

Awards for male/female athletes, games and teams of the year are offered in high school, college/university and professional divisions.

Competing with Wong are Josh Young, Drake basketball; Jake Knott, Iowa State football; Jake Varner, Iowa State wrestling, E.J. Peterson, Grand View football; Dain Taylor, Drake football.

Wong, a 6-foot-1, 230-pound three-year starter, was a third-team selection on the D3football.com All-America team. Earlier he received the Iowa Conference’s Most Valuable Defensive Player Award.

One of five Central players chosen to compete with a Division III all-star team at the Tazon de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) in Mexico Dec. 18, Wong is a three-time all-conference honoree.

Wong compiled a league-leading 11 sacks for a loss of 63 yards and had 49 tackles, including 34 solos, with 17 tackles for loss. He also had three pass breakups, forced two fumbles and recovered one. He was named the league’s defensive player of the week twice (Sept. 13, Nov. 1) and selected to the D3football.com team of the week (Sept. 13).

Wong helped Central lead the conference in total defense (255.5 yards per game), rushing defense (78.7 yards) and pass defense (176.8 yards).
