William Penn Wins 122-81 Over Crossroads

Oskaloosa–Alec Schwab (Sr., Peru, Ill., Business Management) scored 37 points and Oliver Wells (Sr., Cedar Hill, Texas, Business Management) posted a triple-double as the Statesmen men’s basketball team showed no turkey hangover in a 122-81 pounding of Crossroads (Minn.) in non-conference play Saturday.

The 18th-ranked Statesmen (9-3) received scoring contributions from nine players, including five in double figures.

The Knights (1-10) opened the day with the contest’s first four points and were still up 9-6 before the home squad scored 21 unanswered points to lead 27-9. The advantage grew to 20, but Crossroads was persistent and a 24-5 run narrowed the margin to one at 44-43. WPU managed ten of the final 11 points in the first half and never again led by single digits the remainder of the game.

After being outshot 45.9%-40.0% in the initial stanza, the navy and gold were much better after break with a 52.8%-36.1% mark to finish on top 46.9%-41.1%.

The Statesmen were strong in all facets in reaching the century mark for the fifth time this year. William Penn hit 12 total three-pointers, highlighted by nine deep shots from Schwab (one shy of the school record). WPU was also 18-for-25 at the charity stripe, outrebounded the Knights 64-40 (31-14 second-chance points), and forced 23 turnovers that were converted into 36 points.

Schwab guided his team on the glass as well with 13 rebounds. His 37 points are the most by a Statesmen player this campaign. Shane Bosek (Jr., Lowry, Minn., Physical Education) was next in the scoring column with 28 points and ten rebounds to also record a double-double. The junior blocked three shots as well.

Wells had just 16 points, but by tallying 11 rebounds and ten assists, he had the best overall performance for William Penn. It is program’s first triple-double of the season. The senior also stole four passes.

Kelly Madison (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa, Physical Education) also eclipsed double digits, while Logan Alexander (Sr., Eddyville, Iowa, Physical Education) paced the non-starting crew with ten points.

Mike Aldeman (Sr., Iowa City, Iowa, Education), with eight points and five steals, and Erik McGee (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Elementary Education), with six points, both stepped up on Saturday.

Antione Howard (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis., Physical Education) (illness) was unavailable, while Sam Sykes (Jr., Houston, Texas, Business Management) (ankle) was once again out of action.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Ankeny Monday to play Faith Baptist Bible in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
