Oskaloosa–On a night when it showered its 2016 senior class with appreciation, the Statesmen volleyball team gave the group an additional gift with a 3-0 sweep over non-conference foe Faith Baptist Bible Friday.

WPU (7-26) won by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-20. The team outhit the Eagles .189-.033 in the victory.

The hosts had some early struggles, sharing the match’s first 14 points, but then rattled off three in a row and 9 of the next 11 points to take the opening set.

The navy and gold also started slowly in the second round, in fact trailing 15-14 to FBB (11-14). A 4-1 run put the Statesmen ahead for good, though, to take the controlling 2-0 advantage.

Sticking to the theme of the evening, William Penn and Faith Baptist Bible went toe-to-toe in the first half of the third set. Tied at 13-13, the home squad pulled away one more time with four consecutive points and cruised to the sweep.

Savanna Hartman (Sr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology and Human Services), one of the four seniors recognized before the match, paced her team with 12 kills and a .450 hitting clip.

The other three seniors were also productive Friday with Nicole Harrison (Sr., San Diego, Calif., Biology) just missing double figures with nine kills. Shawni Wills (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Exercise Science) added seven kills and Sawyer Woodworth (Sr., Parsons, Kan., Physical Education) had four kills.

Rafaela Macias (Jr., Hanford, Calif., Physical Education), with five kills, and Lilly Martinez (Sr., Oakland, Calif., Psychology), with four winners, helped the Statesmen to a 46-17 edge in kills.

Haley Smith (So., Adrian, Mich., Elementary Education) recorded 20 assists and was one of three players with two aces. Kathleen Steffen (So., Vinton, Iowa, Biology) assisted 16 times and also finished with a team-high 12 digs for a double-double.

Belle Potter (So., Spokane, Wash., Sociology and Human Services) and Ashley Miller (So., Kalona, Iowa, Exercise Science) also hit the double-digit mark with 11 digs each. Harrison was solid on the defensive end as well with one solo block and one block assist.

“It was great to pick up this win for our seniors,” Head Coach Jennifer Carlson said. “We had some issues early on, but warmed up to get a nice victory on a special night. Hopefully we can carry this momentum into our last match of the year next Tuesday.”

Next Up: William Penn wraps up its season Tuesday as it hosts Clarke in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at 7:30 p.m.
