The Statesmen dropped the Threshers 56-0 in last year’s inaugural meeting between the two programs.

Shawn Davis (Jr., Hamersville, Ohio, Western Brown HS) hit the century mark with 108 yards, while Taylor Parsons (Jr., The Woodlands, Texas, College Park HS) was both prolific on the ground (105 yards) and through the air (6-of-8 for 136 yards and two TDs). Andrew Reed (Jr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) recorded two interceptions on the day as the Statesmen forced five turnovers. He was named Midwest League Defensive Player of the Week for his accomplishments.

2011–William Penn, 56-0

WILLIAM PENN PROFILE: Todd Hafner is in his ninth year as head football coach at William Penn, entering the campaign with a 52-37 career record.

Hafner guided William Penn to a 9-2 record last year and the team again led the NAIA in rushing with 3,634 yards. He was also at the helm in 2010 when the navy and gold won their fifth league crown (first since 1976). The team finished 10-1, tying the school record for wins, and also broke NAIA single-season marks for total rushing yards and yards per attempt. Numerous other school marks were set in 2010.

The 2008 and 2010 Midwest League Coach of the Year, Hafner was also the recipient of the VSN NAIA Coach of the Year and the NFCA Region 2 Coach of the Year honors. As skipper, he has produced 119 all-conference players and 14 All-Americans.

Prior to his career at William Penn, Hafner had coaching stops at Carl Junction HS, Southwest Baptist University, Emporia State University, and Pittsburg State University (student coach). Hafner graduated from Pittsburg State in 1994 with a degree in mathematics.

William Penn opened 2012 with a bit of a scare against Iowa Wesleyan, but eventually pulled away for a 39-14 victory. The squads were tied at 14 entering halftime, but a pair of safeties and a special teams touchdown sparked the squad to its 13th straight victory over the Tigers.

Evan Ressler (So., Cascade, Cascade HS) led the offense with a career-high 136 yards and a TD, while Parsons also hit the century mark with 119 yards (2 TDs) and Davis added 95 yards. Defensively, Brock Peery (Jr., Payson, Utah, Payson HS) and Scott Adams (So., Park City, Utah, Park City HS) both recorded nine tackles. Peery was named MWL Defensive POW for his efforts.

For the 2011 year, William Penn averaged 34.3 points and 410.0 yards per game, including 330.4 rushing and 79.6 passing. The squad was the best in the NAIA in total rushing yards (3,634) as well as rushing yards per game. The Statesmen also ranked high in total yards (4,510) and total points (377). Parsons led the Statesmen offense with 1,026 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, while Davis had an additional 957 yards and seven scores. Parsons also ranked high nationally in scoring (86 points). Seven other individuals also eclipsed the century mark in rushing.

Due to the powerful running attack, Parsons did not have to throw the pigskin much. He was 47-of-110 for 819 yards and seven TDs. Chris Crawford (Sr., Muskegon, Mich., Grand Valley State) topped the receiving corps in receptions (12) and DeMarco Sanders was best in yards (256) and TDs (3).

Defensively, the Statesmen gave up an average of 11.3 points and 235.2 yards, including 146.1 passing and 89.1 rushing. William Penn was strong nationally in points allowed per game, total points allowed (124), total yards allowed per game, rushing yards allowed per game, and total rushing yards (980). Damon Harrison was the top tackler for the navy and gold with 60 stops (8.5 for loss). Dunbar had five sacks and Joseph Frye (So., Detroit, Mich., Highland Park HS) had four interceptions.

Kerrigan was nearly perfect in point-after-attempts at 48-of-51, but was just 5-of-14 in field goals. The team utilized two punters, Kerrigan and Jason Johnson (Jr., Geneseo, Ill., Geneseo HS). Kerrigan kicked 24 times for a clip of 35.3 yards, while Johnson punted 17 times for a 38.3 yard average. Sanders topped the kick return game with 17 runbacks for a 21.4 average, while Crawford took 20 punts back for a clip of 7.8 yards, including a 49-yard touchdown.

William Penn is picked to finish second in the Midwest League.

bethel (Kan.) PROFILE: James Dotson was named interim head coach in early August.

Dotson served as an assistant coach at Bethel in the 1990s. He has plenty of other coaching experience, ranging from high school and college to international. Dotson has spent time at the Virginia-Wise, Carson-Newman, Jefferson City HS (Tenn.), Trinity Bible, Ellendale HS (N.D.), and internationally in England, France, Germany, and Ukraine. He has a bachelor’s degree from Carson-Newman and a master’s from Tennessee Tech.

The Threshers ended 2011 with a 72-6 loss to #11 Ottawa. Bethel was 2-9 last year, including a 2-7 record in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. Outgained 467-170, there were few bright spots in the loss. The lone score came on defense as Bobby Adamson sacked the quarterback, forcing a fumble. Nathan Murphy scooped up the ball and ran it back 17 yards for the touchdown. Jorden Oden rushed for 58 yards, while Rigel Jonec completed eight passes for 59 yards.

For the year, the Thresher offense tallied 11.9 points and 233.9 yards per game, including 113.2 passing and 120.7 rushing. Oden rushed for 620 yards and five touchdowns, while three other players also finished with over 100 yards on the ground.

Levi Keffer completed 67-of-154 passes for 806 yards and five scores. Jonec added 376 yards passing and a TD. Four different players accounted for 218 yards or more receiving, highlighted by Chris Allen’s 20 grabs for 348 yards. Andrew McNary hauled in 24 balls as 12 players caught a pass in 2011.

Defensively, Bethel (Kan.) gave up 47.9 points and 499.5 yards per contest, including 274.1 rushing and 225.5 passing. Murphy tallied a team-high 62 tackles (six for loss), while five players had one sack. Four individuals produced an interception.

Brandon Lluis punted 70 times for a 33.5 average. He was also 18-of-20 in extra points and 3-of-7 in field goals. Chris Smith and Austin Williams shared kick return responsibilities. Smith took 31 balls back an average of 18.8 yards, while Williams had 22 returns for a 21.5 yard clip. Williams was the best punt returner with seven tries for a 5.4 yard average.

Bethel (Kan.) is picked to finish tenth in the KCAC.

COACH HAFNER SAYS: On the Iowa Wesleyan game: “After watching the game film, it was as we thought. We had lots of unforced errors and mental mistakes that cost us big plays on offense and defense. We will do a better job as coaches this week of making our players pay better attention to detail and reinforce the fact that they must focus on each and every play. In the end, it was a big win and we will look forward to this weekend.”

On Bethel (Kan.): “Bethel is a team that has already faced much adversity with their coach leaving at the end of July. They looked talented on film and we will have to go down there focused and ready to play a physical game. It is going to be extremely hot and our players will have to be mentally tough and driven to come out on top.”
