William Penn Earns Win #6 in South Dakota
Yankton, S.D.–Leonardo Teixeira (Sr., Sao Paolo, Brazil, Business Management) scored twice in the second half as the Statesmen men’s soccer team dropped Mount Marty 4-2 in non-conference play Friday.
William Penn (6-2) fell behind in the first two minutes and continued to trail past the halfway point of the first stanza. Angelo Kelly (So., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) finally got the ball rolling as his equalizer came at 28:37 off a pass from Mark Dryden (Sr., Arbroath, Scotland, Biology). The goal is Kelly’s fourth of the season. He paced the navy and gold with five shots as the visitors outshot MMC 21-13.
That opened the floodgates for the Statesmen as Emilio Grassetto (Fr., Cordoba, Argentina, Business Management) put home a pass from Kelly just 24 seconds later. The goal was Grassetto’s first in his collegiate career, while Kelly now has a team-best five assists.
Teixeira and Grassetto hooked up for a goal in the 60th minute to make it 3-1, but the Lancers (3-3) narrowed the advantage to one with a score at 74:52.
Fortunately, Teixeira iced the contest with an unassisted goal in the final minute. He is now tied with Kelly for the team lead in goals.
Mason Bandy (Jr., Calgary, B.C., Biology) saved three shots in his first game back since the season opener.
WPU is off to its best eight-game start since being 5-1-2 in 2008.
