Oskaloosa–The Statesmen men’s basketball team made easy work of last-place Culver-Stockton Saturday, winning 122-82 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.
#2 WPU (22-3, 18-3 Heart) notched its fourth win in a row, reaching the century mark for the sixth time this season.
The navy and gold tallied 21 of the first 23 points and were never threatened Saturday, outshooting the Wildcats (1-25, 0-22 Heart) by a 57.5%-46.9% edge.
The hosts led 68-42 at intermission and ballooned the advantage to as much as 45 midway through the second stanza. The Statesmen committed only six turnovers, while turning C-SC over 18 times, good for a 22-4 edge in points off turnovers. William Penn secured a 40-32 rebounding margin as well.
Possibly the best part of WPU’s effort, though, was its three-point shooting as it went 15-for-28 from deep.
Fifteen different Statesmen scored in the victory, led by Torren Jones (Sr., Chandler, Ariz., Sociology) with a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds.
Four other WPU players also eclipsed double figures, including Jarvis Haywood (Sr., Charlotte, N.C., Business Management) with 17 points in a near-perfect return to action. Jeremy Postell (Sr., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology) and Charles Knowles (Sr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) were next with 13 points apiece, while Brandon Trotter (Jr., Louisville, Ky., Kinesiology) produced 11 points.
Lionel Ellison (Sr., New Orleans, La., Kinesiology) and Dashawn Benson (Jr., Uniondale, N.Y., Sociology) both contributed eight points, Kevin Smith (Sr., Baltimore, Md., Physical Education) had seven points, and Corbin Medley (Jr., Rogersville, Mo., General Accounting) recorded six points with five assists. Kenneth Schell (So., Buena Vista, Colo., Psychology) ended the win with five points.
“This win is dedicated to Statesmen super fan Mary Lou Sedrel and her son Randy, who is in the hospital,” Head Coach John Henry said.
Next Up: William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo. Monday to face Missouri Valley in Heart action at 7:30 p.m.
