Lady Statesmen Clip Vikings 100-83

Des Moines–Orielle Thomas (Fr., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS) scored a season-high 23 points to pace the Penn women’s basketball team to a 100-83 win over Grand View in Midwest Collegiate Conference action Wednesday.

The Lady Statesmen (13-6, 5-1 MCC), winners of four straight, are seven games over .500 for the first time since 1989-1990 (ended year at 17-9) and are four games better than even in the MCC for the first time ever.

It is also the third time Penn has hit the century mark this winter, matching the 1986-1987 team for the most 100-point games in a single year.

The win snaps a ten-game losing streak to Grand View as well.  The program’s last win over the Vikings came on January 14, 2006 (66-64), while its last victory in Des Moines was in February 2004.

Both squads shot extremely well all night with the Vikings actually holding a slim 57.1%-55.4% edge from the floor.  The difference came in ball control, however, as Grand View (5-13, 1-4 MCC) was forced into 22 turnovers, which Penn converted into 23 points.  The visitors had just 11 mistakes, good for 11 Viking points.

The Lady Statesmen trailed for a good chunk of the first half, but claimed the lead for good at 33-32 on a jumper by Thomas with 6:43 left until break.  Penn eventually pushed the advantage up to 11 points at halftime.

The margin was trimmed to eight twice after intermission, but the Lady Statesmen were never really threatened, going up by as much as 25 points late in the game.

Thomas was 9-of-12 from the field and also guided Penn on the glass with eight rebounds.

She was joined in double figures by four others, including Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS) with 19 points.  Samantha Darley (Sr., Gilbert, Ariz., Mesa CC) tallied 15 points, while Carleigh Hobson (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) added 14 points off the bench.

Sarah Martin (So., Anthem, Ariz., Boulder Creek HS) contributed ten points in addition to a game-best six assists.  Christie Menard (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Chaffey CC) narrowly missed the mark with eight points.

Penn was lethal from behind the arc, going 9-of-16.  It is the first time since the opening week of the year that the squad shot over 50% from three-point land.

The Lady Statesmen also made eight more free throws (19-11) than Grand View.  Although the rebounding numbers were even (30-30), Penn but was more opportunistic with its additional offensive chances (12-6) and outscored the Vikings 11-2 in second-chance points.

Statesmen Fall to Rival Grand View
Des Moines–It was a game featuring two perennial league powers going through tough seasons and unfortunately the Penn men’s basketball team continued its struggles Wednesday with an 81-68 loss to Grand View in Midwest Collegiate Conference action.

Penn (9-9, 1-4 MCC) is suffering through a five-game losing streak and is .500 for the first time since being 1-1 in November.

The visitors were tied with the Vikings (10-6, 1-4 MCC) at 31-31 at the break and came out of the locker room strong, taking a team-best four-point lead in the early minutes.

Grand View battled back, though, and took the lead for good just minutes later.  The contest remained tight for much of the second stanza with the home team holding just a nominal three-point advantage at 67-64 with 4:49 left.

The Vikings pulled away in the end, however, with six straight over the next 3:01 and cruised to their first conference win of the winter.

The Statesmen were outshot 43.9%-36.6%.

Huzie Hambrite (Jr., Indianapolis, Ind., Ball State) and Wiebe Goodyk (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa Central CC) scored a team-high 13 points each, while Blake Walker (Fr., Smyrna, Ga., Campbell HS) added 11 to also finish in double digits.

Ryan Wilson (Sr., Ballwin, Mo., Missouri-Kansas City) just missed the mark with eight points, while Alan Douglas (Jr., Champaign, Ill., Lakeland CC) contributed five points and corralled a squad-best seven rebounds.  Penn won the rebounding battle 37-35.
