Grove Earns Second Laurel

Oskaloosa–Brittanee Grove (Jr., Runnells, Iowa, Elementary Education) was honored for her big part in helping the William Penn softball team claim this year’s league title as she was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Softball Player of the Week Monday.

Grove won her second award as the Statesmen (33-17, 19-4 MCC) went 7-0 last week to rally past Grand View for the MCC crown in the final days of the year.

The junior hit .579 (11-for-19) with four doubles, two home runs, 11 RBIs, and nine runs scored. She also drew six walks to tally a .654 on-base percentage. Grove managed four multiple-hit games (one with three hits), drove in two runs on four occasions, and scored multiple runs three times (high of three runs).

For the year, Grove is hitting .463 (69-for-149) with 16 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 56 RBIs, and 53 runs scored. She is also sporting an .879 slugging percentage and a .547 on-base mark.

The award is the eighth for the program this spring (fifth player honor).

Qualification Helps Edwards to Another Award

Oskaloosa–Alex Edwards (Jr., Knoxville, Iowa, Secondary Education) took a bit longer to qualify than he would have liked, but his performance to get to the big stage was so impressive it netted him Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week accolades Monday.

Edwards collected his fourth weekly honor (second outdoor, sixth career) after beating the NAIA automatic-qualifying time in the 800-meter run at 1:52.46 at the Simpson Kip Janvrin Open Friday.

The junior broke his own school record in the race and now currently ranks tenth in the nation in the 800. He has the fastest 800 and 400-meter dash times in the league entering this week’s MCC Championships.

William Penn has won eight AOW awards this year (five in outdoor).

Mauricio’s Hot Bat Yields MCC Laurel

Oskaloosa–A big week by Kyle Mauricio (Sr., Ardene Hills, Minn., Physical Education) was rewarded as he was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Baseball Player of the Week Monday.

Mauricio took home his first weekly honor in the final regular season week of his career. He hit .619 (13-for-21) with one double, five runs scored, and three RBIs. The senior also walked two times and stole two bases.

Mauricio, who posted a .704 on-base clip, had a hit in six of WPU’s seven games, highlighted by five multi-hit contests (two with three hits). His best performance came against Mount Mercy by going 3-for-4 (one double) with two runs and one RBI.

For the year, he is hitting a team-best .361 (44-for-122) with three doubles, 26 runs scored, and 19 RBIs. The senior also leads WPU by being hit by pitch 11 times and is tied for first with nine sacrifice hits.
