Powell Paces Lady Statesmen at Kegel/ISBPA Classic

Addison, Ill.–Samantha Powell (So., Herriman, Utah, Bingham HS) placed in the top 20 as the Penn women’s bowling team returned to action at the Kegel/ISBPA Collegiate Classic Saturday and Sunday.

As a team, Penn placed tenth out of 28 teams with 6,837 pins in six regular games and ten Baker games.  The Lady Statesmen were in eighth place after regular play.

Wichita State (Kan.) won the crown with 7,597 pins, nipping McKendree (Ill.) by just nine pins.  Brandi Branka of McKendree won the individual title with a 206.5 average (1,239 pins).

Powell placed 15th overall (out of 187 competitors) by knocking down a total of 1,102 pins in six games for a 183.7 average.

Breanne Underwood (Sr., Treynor, Treynor HS) just missed the top 30, taking 32nd with a 177.0 average in six games, while Sarah Randles (So., Las Vegas, Nev., Shadow Ridge HS) was right behind her in 38th with a 175.2 average in six games.

Kirstin Newberry (So., Holland, Mich., West Ottawa HS), in 70th with a 156.3 average (six games), and Abilgayle Wempen (So., Titonka, North Iowa HS), in 90th with a 159.2 average (five games), also found their ways inside the top 100.

Amanda Edenholm (So., Marysville, Wash., Marysville-Pilchuck HS) threw a 192 in her lone game.

Next: Penn is off a week before traveling to Madison, Wis. to compete in the Warhawk Open on November 6-7.


Two Men’s Teams in Action at Kegel/ISBPA Tourney

Addison, Ill.–The Statesmen bowling team finished in the top half of the field at the Kegel/ISBPA Collegiate Classic Saturday and Sunday.

As a team, Penn placed 16th out of 36 teams with 7,413 pins in six regular games and ten Baker games.  The Statesmen picked up two places with strong Baker play.

Wichita State’s (Kan.) C team upset its two higher squads, winning the tournament with 7,898 pins, 15 ahead of the program’s A team.  Tyler Harrman of Rochester Tech won the individual title with a 218.5 average (1,311 pins).

Sean Rangel (So., Omaha, Neb., Bellevue East HS) headed the Statesmen in 39th place overall (out of 248 competitors) with an average of 188.0 pins in six games (1,182 pins).

Cameron Foster (Fr., West Jordan, Utah, West Jordan HS) and Drew Balta (Fr., Walford, Cedar Rapids Prairie HS) were not far behind Rangel.  Foster was 47th with a 182.3 average, while Balta averaged 182.0 pins.  Both bowled in all six regular games.

James Miller (Sr., Oswego, Ill., Vincennes) averaged 170.2 pins in five games, while Piet Schaeffer was very strong in four games with a 193.5 average.

Andrew Zaug (So., Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) tallied a 182.3 average in three contests.

Penn also had a B team in competition and placed 27th with 7,073 pins.  Kyle Hammann (Jr., Knoxville, Knoxville HS) led the charge as the program’s overall top bowler, finishing in 26th place with a 192.3 average in six games.

Kyle Clark (Fr., Oswego, Ill., Yorkville HS, with a 173.7 average, and Ethan Noble (Fr., Cedar Rapids, Cedar Rapids Washington HS), with a 169.3 average, were also strong in throwing all six games.

Mackenzie Van Zante (Fr., Pella, Pella HS) averaged 180.6 pins in five games and Eric Smith (So., Glenwood, Glenwood HS) recorded a 181.8 average in four games.  Nathan Namanny (So., Denison, Denison HS) bowled a 151 in his lone game.

Next: Penn is off a week before traveling to Madison, Wis. to compete in the Warhawk Open on November 6-7.
