Football Team Nominated for Award
Oskaloosa–The 2010 Statesmen gridiron campaign left a lasting impression on many and now the team will have the chance to collect some additional hardware for its achievements.
The Des Moines Area Sports Commission (DMASC), an organization under the Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau, is asking for fans to vote for great local sports performances from 2010 for the 2nd Annual Central Iowa Sports Awards (CISA). The CISAs, which will hold its banquet Saturday, February 27, honors individuals and teams who pursued excellence last year.
Penn, who finished this past season at 10-1 and shared the Midwest League crown (its fifth ever), was nominated by an alum and will be competing against Iowa State’s women’s basketball team as well as Iowa State’s women’s cross country/track teams for College Team of the Year.
All nominated players, teams, or activities must have occurred during the 2010 calendar year as well as within a 75-mile radius of home plate at Principal Park. Nominations came from members of the DMASC as well as area athletics directors.
Voting will run from January 10-February 18 and all are welcome to vote. To vote for the Statesmen, click here You must first register in order to vote.

Lady Statesmen Down to #28
Oskaloosa–Despite one of the biggest wins in school history last week, the Penn women’s basketball team was denied its first appearance inside the NAIA Division II top 25 as the fourth poll was released yesterday.
The Lady Statesmen (12-6, 4-1 MCC) fell two slots to 28th with 41 votes. Penn clipped then #12 Iowa Wesleyan last Wednesday, 73-72. Since the last rating, Penn is 3-2 with its two losses coming to now #10 St. Ambrose as well as ranked NCAA Division II Dixie State (Utah).
All six of the squad’s setbacks have come against teams currently ranked or were ranked or receiving votes at the time of the loss.
Courtesy of a win against the former #1, Davenport (Mich.) now leads Division II with 405 points and all 15 first-place votes. Former #1 Northwestern is now second, while Morningside, Sioux Falls (S.D.), and Kansas Wesleyan round out the top five.
St. Ambrose still leads the Midwest Collegiate Conference at #10, while Iowa Wesleyan is 13th. Including Penn, seven programs from the state of Iowa are represented in the top 25 or are receiving votes.
