Subbert Picks Up First POW Honor of Year

Oskaloosa–Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS) had another tremendous week and was finally recognized for her efforts as she was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, announced by the league office today.

Subbert helped Penn (12-6, 4-1 MCC) to wins over #12 Iowa Wesleyan Wednesday (73-72) and Viterbo Saturday (74-60) last week.

The senior, who has now been honored by the league three times in her career, averaged 28 points and seven rebounds. She connected on 62.5% of her shots (20-of-32), was 37.5% from behind the arc (3-of-8), and hit 81.3% at the charity stripe (13-of-16). Subbert scored a season-best 34 points Saturday and also tied her campaign high with ten rebounds for her second double-double of the year. It was her fourth performance of 30 or more points this winter.

Subbert, who is chasing down the school’s all-time scoring leader (Becky Inman, 2,139 points), currently has 1,859 points in her career and 388 points this season. It has been by far her best campaign, averaging 21.6 points on 44.4% shooting. She is also pulling down 5.5 rebounds per contest in addition to 26 assists, seven blocks, and 38 steals. The Stanton native is also tops for Penn in free throw shooting at 84.5%.

Subbert leads the MCC in scoring and scoring average and is in the top ten in several other areas.

The honor is the first for the women’s basketball program this year.

Burnett Named Indoor Field AOW

Oskaloosa–Katie Burnett (Sr., Mesa, Ariz., Arizona) qualified for another national championship and for her efforts she was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, announced by the league office today.

Burnett, now a four-time MCC recipient (second indoor honor), easily won Ashford’s 3,000-meter race walk event in a time of 15:22.18.

She outdistanced the two other competitors in the event (both men) with a finishing mark that was more than two and a half minutes faster than the NAIA’s automatic qualifying time.

A four-time All-American (runner-up in last year’s indoor race), Burnett will be seeking her first national championship in March at the NAIA’s indoor championships in Geneva, Ohio.

It is the first honor for Penn’s indoor track and field programs this year.
