Mueller, Alvarez Sweep Awards
Oskaloosa–Another week has passed and two more awards have been garnered by the William Penn baseball team as the Midwest Collegiate Conference weekly honors were announced Monday.
Jayme Mueller (Sr., Mundelein, Ill., Sociology) was named MCC Pitcher of the Week, while Ricky Alvarez (Sr., Sylmar, Calif., Sociology) earned league Player of the Week status. The duo helped the Statesmen (12-10, 2-2 MCC) to a sweep over Viterbo.
Mueller tossed five scoreless innings against Viterbo Thursday, including posting five strikeouts against one walk. He also performed at the plate with a single in the seventh that scored the only two runs of the game.
For the year, the senior is 1-0 with a team-best 1.50 Earned Run Average. Over 12 innings, he has 14 strikeouts versus four walks and opponents are hitting .227 against him.
Alvarez played in just one game last week, but performed well with two hits against the V-Hawks.
For the year, the senior is hitting .353 (6-for-17) with two runs scored and one RBI.
The awards are the fifth and sixth for WPU this year.
Land Garners League Pitcher of the Week Honor
Oskaloosa–Carly Land (Sr., Mission Viejo, Calif., Education) did a lot more than just pick up the slack for William Penn last week as she was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week.
Land earned her first career POW honor after leading the Statesmen (15-7) to a 3-1 record last week.
The senior drew extended work as two-time MCC Pitcher of the Year Jennifer Whitehead (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) battled through an illness. She tossed a total of 20 2/3 frames, going 2-1 with a 1.02 Earned Run Average.
Land recorded her first shutout of the season on Thursday with a three-hit performance against Graceland and then notched her first save against Dickinson State (N.D.) Friday.
For the year, Land is 8-4 with a 1.23 ERA in 74 frames of work. She has posted 52 strikeouts with 23 walks and opponents are hitting only .217 against her. The senior has thrown ten complete games.
The award is the third for WPU this year.
Green Collects 13th Career Accolade
Oskaloosa–Gabriel Green (Sr., Anniston, Ala., Business Management) sprinted his way to yet another award as he was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week Monday.
Green earned the third laurel of his senior campaign (13th overall) by guiding the Statesmen at the Central Invitational Thursday.
The senior won the 200 (22.29 seconds) and 400-meter dash (50.15 seconds) events and was third in the prelims in the 100-meter dash (11.00 seconds). He did not compete in the finals of the 100.
Green has the league’s top time in the 100 and 200. His award is the sixth for WPU this year.
