Wesley Shepard

Oskaloosa. Wesley L. Shepard, 73, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Centerville, died Monday, January 24, 2011, at the Mahaska Hospital in Oskaloosa. He was born on Friday, October 10, 1937, in Centerville, Iowa; he was raised by his step-father and mother Michael and Maxine Fowler Maletta. He graduated from the Centerville High School with the class of 1956. On April 19, 1957, he was united in marriage to Vivian Hixenbaugh in Centerville. He worked at Hy-Vee in Centerville for 18 years as the frozen foods manager; he retired from there in 1999. In August of 2003, they moved to Oskaloosa. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, home improvement, working outside and lending a helping hand. He delighted in spending time with his family.

His family includes his wife: Vivian Shepard of Oskaloosa; 2 sons: Kris (& Ruth) Shepard of Frankfort, Illinois and Kirk (& Keri) Shepard of Oskaloosa; a daughter: Kimberly (& David) Gile of Oskaloosa; 7 grandchildren: Kyle, Luke, Mikaela, Neela and Korey Shepard and Alex and Travis Gile; 2 sisters: Loretta Dykes of Cedar Falls and Iva (& Lanny) Doggett of Udell; 2 brothers: Richard Shepard of Mishawaka, Indiana and Jackie (& Annie) Shepard of LaVista, Nebraska; a step brother: John Maletta of Bellevue, Nebraska; 3 step sisters: Barbara (& Charles) Owens of North Carolina, Mary Ann (& George) McCloskey of Norway, Iowa, and Patricia Roe of Iowa City; and a brother-in-law: Ron Plum of Sheldon, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a half sister Connie Plum; and a step sister: Fairie Tate.

Funeral services for Wesley Shepard will be held Thursday, January 27, 2011, at 1 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Michael Omundson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Wednesday after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Wednesday from 4:30 -7:30 p.m. to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
