Oskaloosa, Iowa – Helping families have a home of their own. Mahaska County Habitat for Humanity works with its partner families to make that dream a reality.

On Sunday, volunteers converged on one of those such homes, this time to help refresh and rehab one such home for a new family to enjoy.

Out came the paint brushes, rollers and pans, and with a bit of elbow grease, volunteers got to work adding a fresh coat of paint. This was all part of a special program from Lowe’s Home Improvement and National Women Build Week.

Valinn McReynolds, Executive Director of Mahaska County Habitat For Humanity, said the day gives an opportunity to empower women to become more familiar with, and step out of their comfort zone, with home improvement.  “A construction site can be kind of intimidating,” says McReynolds.

This is the third year the local Habitat for Humanity has been given the $5,000 grant, with only 300 grants being given out nationwide.

Miss Iowa US Jessica VerSteeg, present and with paint roller in hand, said this of being part of the project, “anyone can help and anyone can do anything for their community.”

There was only one minor hitch to completing the days work… storm sirens. As the crew worked, a tornado warning was issued for Oskaloosa, causing the work to come to a halt. The project will pick back up again on Wednesday, May 14th from 5 to 7 pm. The home is located at 515 South A.
