Many volunteers helped to make “Hope Depot” a successful day.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Months of planning and preparation culminated in a large display of volunteerism in Mahaska County when approximately 100 people came out to help serve others.

Four area churches, The Fellowship Bible Church, the First Christian Reformed Church, the Lifehouse Community Church and the Omega Church, all helped to spearhead the day, but volunteers came from a multitude of different churches throughout town.

Those 100 plus volunteers then help to serve 135 families, with things like haircuts, dental information, eye screenings, blood pressure checks, a family photo and for 38 cars, an oil change. The line to get into New Hope stretched half way down the block, and George Filber, Youth Pastor of Fellowship Bible Church said that approximately 15 families were in line a half hour before it started. “I’m excited about the turnout, ” said Filber.

Those waiting in line were treated to a lunch while they waited.

“That’s one of the exciting things is to see the church in Oskaloosa, we want to give back, and really initiate giving back to people in the community. That’s a cool thing,” Filber added.

Once a family came in, they were greeted by a host who helped them navigate the many different services being offered. As the guest family was preparing to the leave, they were given a bag of groceries and was able to visit the Klothes Kloset where they could search for clothing and take it home with them at no charge.

Also at the Klothes Kloset was 47 hand-made quilts that were donated for the day as well. Also, each child that came through the door was provided a free hand-made wooden toy, or until the supply was exhausted.

The 200 bags of groceries was donated by members of the church congregations.

The group did a similar event two years ago. Filber said that the amount of volunteers was greater than the day in the past. “It’s an exciting thing to see this many people together doing this. What an awesome thing to be a part of.”
