ST. PAUL, MINN. — While the team finish wasn’t where coach Chad Green would like, two Central College men’s golf players shot career-best rounds Monday at the Twin Cities Classic in St. Paul, Minn.

Sophomores Trevor Schweinefus (Ossian, Iowa/South Winneshiek HS) and Hunter Sickels (Creston, Iowa) both carded a final-round 71 to set a new career mark. The 1-under par rounds are the first under-par rounds for a Dutch player this fall season and the first time two players shot under par in a round since last October.

The Dutch shot a final-round 295 at the par-72, 6,961-yard Ridges at Sand Creek course to finish 10th in the 20-team field at 298-324-295–917. St. Thomas (Minn.) took home the team title, shooting 293-296-291—880. The Tommies’ Nick Nielsen shot 1-under par for the tournament to win by one stroke over his teammate Pete Sienko in the 113-player field.

Monday’s 295 for Central came on the heels of a second-round 324 Sunday at the par-72, 6560-yard Elk River Country Club course.

“We showed our youth and inexperience Sunday,” Green said. “It was a tough course in tough conditions and we did not play well at all.”

Central bounced back nicely in Monday’s final round.

“We played a good course in good scoring conditions today,” said Green. “The guys took advantage of that and posted some very low numbers.”

Schweinefus shot 79-78-71—228 to finish tied for 28th. Senior Jared Nepomuceno (Corona, Calif./Santiago HS) carded 72-80-77—229 and tied for 30th. Sophomore Ryan Minor (Urbandale, Iowa/Des Moines Christian HS) tied for 35th after firing 72-82-76—230. Sickels moved up 22 places from round two, tying for 81st with an 89-84-71—244. Junior Brock Morris (Manchester, Iowa/West Delaware HS) tied for 85th in his first tournament of the season, shooting 75-91-79—245.

The Dutch will hit the course again next Sunday and Monday at the Grand View Viking Classic in Polk City. The event will be played at the Tournament Club of Iowa.

Green is looking forward to giving players valuable experience.

“It will be a quality field on a really nice course,” Green said. “We are planning on taking a lot of players and giving them the opportunity to play against good competition.”
