Statesmen Put in Holiday Break Work at Soldier Salute

Coralville–The William Penn women’s wrestling team knocked the rust off as it competed at the Soldier Salute Sunday and Monday.

The event included an Open and Silver division and Kendall Bostelman (Jr., Napoleon, Ohio, Exercise Science) paced the navy and gold in the Open division by finishing 3-1 at 138 pounds. The junior posted two technical falls and one fall.

Espie Almazan (Fr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Political Science) also collected three victories (all falls) at 138 pounds, while Isabelle Hawley (Jr., Winchester, Calif., Sociology) earned one technical fall at the same weight class.

160-pounder Alexa Wolf (Fr., Rogers, Ark., Business Management) had her hand raised once in victory as well.

Tyler Swanigan (Fr., Northville, Mich., Kinesiology) and Grecia Martinez (So., Horizon City, Texas, Industrial Engineering) met in the Silver division’s 131-pound finals. Swanigan came away with the fall to finish 2-0 (also had a technical fall), while Martinez was 2-1 with a technical fall to her credit.

Naida Abdijanovic (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) joined Swanigan in the winner’s circle as she was 2-0 in the Silver 145-pound bracket. The junior picked up one fall and one technical fall.

During the tournament, WPU Assistant Coach Megan Black-Campion, one of the pioneers in women’s wrestling, was also honored as the Soldier Salute named its Most Outstanding Wrestler Award after her.

Next Up: William Penn travels to Cedar Falls next Friday and Saturday to compete in the NWCA Nationals Duals.
