Batesville, Ark.–Behind several strong performances at the plate and in the circle, the William Penn softball team won three of five games at the Lyon Tournament Saturday and Sunday.

The Statesmen (3-2) had a bitter start to their campaign Saturday with a 5-2 loss to Evangel (Mo.), but responded with a 7-4 win over Ozarks (Ark.) and a 7-0 victory against host Lyon. On Sunday, the winning streak moved to three with a 10-1, five-inning decision over Lyon. Unfortunately, the weekend ended poorly with a 3-1 loss to Ozarks.

Evangel 5, William Penn 2

The navy and gold did not storm out of the 2013 gate, being outhit 6-3 against Evangel. Down 2-0 entering the top of the fifth, the team knotted up the contest when Callie Henry (Sr., Earlham, Iowa, Elementary Education) singled home BreeAnne Chism (Jr., Fullerton, Calif., Psychology). Diana Cassaro (So., Las Vegas, Nev., Undecided) also scored on the play.

Evangel came back, though, with three unanswered to claim the win.

Two-time defending Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year Jennifer Whitehead (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) allowed five runs (three earned), while striking out ten (one walk).

William Penn 7, Ozarks 4

The offense exploded in the day’s second contest with the Statesmen owning an 11-4 edge in base knocks.

William Penn scored three runs in the first and two more in the second and fifth frames. Cassie Lohman (Sr., Burbank, Calif., Sociology) went 3-for-4 with two runs, while K.C. Routos (Sr., Newcastle, Wash., Physical Education) was 2-for-3 (one home run) with a team-best four RBIs. Bri Zerley (So., Monroe, Iowa, Biology) finished 2-for-4 and Henry also cleared the fence with a three-run homer.

Carly Land (Sr., Mission Viejo, Calif., Education) tallied seven strikeouts against only one walk in her Statesmen debut. The defense behind her struggled a bit in committing three errors as only one of Ozarks’ four runs was earned.

William Penn 7, Lyon 0

William Penn, which recorded 19 shutouts a year ago, posted its first of 2013 to conclude Saturday’s action.

Not only did Whitehead keep the home team off the boards, but did it with one of her best performances ever. The junior southpaw tossed a four-walk no-hitter (the second of her career), striking out a career-high 15 in the win.

Whitehead had plenty of run support as the Statesmen managed 14 hits. Routos was 3-for-5, while Sollita Lucero was 2-for-4 and Lohman was 2-for-5 (two doubles). Lohman tallied three RBIs and Ashley Kingery (Sr., Knoxville, Iowa, Public Accounting) crossed home plate twice.

William Penn 10, Lyon 1

The navy and gold offense was even better in its second appearance versus Lyon with ten runs on 14 hits to claim its first run-rule victory.

Lohman, who finished with a .500 batting average (10-for-20) at the tourney, tacked on two more doubles in a 4-for-4 showing. The senior lead-off hitter scored on three occasions.

Henry, Zerley, Molly Miller (Sr., Kalona, Iowa, Business Management), and pinch-hitter Katelyn Buckalew (Fr., Granger, Iowa, Undecided) all finished with two hits. Henry paced the Statesmen with four RBIs, while Buckalew had two. Miller and Routos both rounded the bases twice.

Land (2-0) gave up just one unearned run on four hits. The senior struck out four against three bases on balls.

Ozarks 3, William Penn 1

A 5-4 advantage in hits was not enough to life William Penn over Ozarks in the rematch. Sonia Ray (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Physical Education) scored the lone Statesmen run on a single by Cassaro.

Miller and Henry both produced two hits, while Routos drew three walks. Whitehead (1-2) allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits. The senior recorded ten strikeouts with three walks.

William Penn more than doubled its opposition at the plate, .320-.158.

Next: William Penn returns to action next week in Tucson, Ariz. for its annual spring break trip. The team plays 13 non-conference games over the span of seven days in the southwest (off on March 5).
